The Tracking Club

The Tracking Club Tracking Club is a place to learn Wilderness Survival, Tracking and Outdoor Adventure. Tracking Club was started in 1995 by Jim D a local naturalist and mentor.

Through his trickster teaching methods he has brought so many closer to nature trough games, stories ,aloofness and acceptance and interest in people and their connection to nature. In 2007 Mo Bissonnette (a former Tracking Club student) took over the Tracking Club after attending the Vermont Wilderness School in 2006. Mo currently runs the Tracking Club taking kids and teens on adventures in Nature all around Addison county and beyond.

Mink live near creeks, rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes. Mink tracks show five toes on both front and hind feet. The front track often shows only four toes. Tracks are a bit more than an inch long. The toes of mink tracks can appear pointed due to the claw marks. The five toes are asymmetrical in arrangement, with the inner toe (the smallest one) being set back further in the track. This is very visible on the hind tracks.

Saw this up on the ridge line surrounded by for trees. It’s about 5.5 inches off the ground. What do you think, black bear, a hatchet or something else?

Exploring the woods in Waterbury today. Still not a lot of signs from the hibernators even with the warm weather.

to Tracking Club causing trouble in the recently protected (at the time) land. The " building" (because it looks like the place where one would be strangely murdered, haunted or abducted by aliens) has long since been torn down. I think these pics might be from '97. Back in the day, the early, outlaw days of the tracking club. We found a freshly killed Fisher by the roadside. Tracking founder Jim Dobkowski scooped it up, cleaned it, cooked it and we all ate some of the mustelid. Later, at a community presentation, Sue Morse, founder of the excellent program Keeping Track, (and arch-rival of the Tracking Club) spoke about the disappearance of her beloved Fisher Mr.Softie who she'd last scene around the time of our meal. As we sat in that auditorium, probably still digesting Mr. Softie, we all had to admit, it'd been a weird meal. But we also all could feel in our hearts that somewhere, out in the ether, Mr. Softie was smiling and whispering softly, "Bon Appetit boys! Bon Appetit!" Jae Sun Gra Alex Martin

This month on Outdoor Radio, biologists Kent McFarland and Sara Zahendra of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies head out into the woods to track the Fisher.

An African raised tracker of European descent, Ingwe was closely connected with the Tracking club and before his health took a down turn, he travelled to Lincoln VT and lead a series of workshops for us. We sat around the fire during that weekend and he told stories of growing up in the Kenyan/Tanzanian wilds and learning from the indigenous people there. Read the book. As KRS-1 said "You must learn!"

According to Ingwe, People need to reach out and touch. They must learn to think positively of what can be accomplished. Though the Africans taught me the skills for survival, lore, and language, the greatest gift that I received from them was a spirituality which centered on the wilderness. This...
