A BREAKFAST AT PANACHE. We have enjoyed many dinners alone and with friends at the fabulous European Restaurant Panache in Cabo San Lucas. We decided that it was time to visit and try their breakfast. The new location just off the main road into Cabo San Lucas on the side road to the right just after McDonalds, offers great seating in a pleasant environment, and valet parking.

We were given our choice of tables (unlike dinner where reservations are a must) and the placement sized menu was placed in front of each of us. Our server asked if we would like coffee and Beth said yes, while I asked for hot chocolate and orange juice. The menu has a great selection of both traditional and European breakfast choice - pancakes, eggs, waffles, six different croques (French breakfast sandwiches), croissants, crepes, bagels and lox, and of course, Eggs Benedict.

Beth decided to have an omelette with vegetables, tater tots and a side of crisp bacon. The omelette was huge and cooked to perfection with baby carrots, cauliflower, onions, mushrooms, and more. The tater tots were great (I snuck a few). I ordered the Eggs Benedict with salmon, which come with a pink hollandaise sauce and choice of salad (Caesar or mixed). I chose the Caesar. The plate was piled high with the salad with its delicious Caesar dressing and croutons. We took our time enjoying the meal, with some much to eat.

As always, the quality, portions, and presentation of the food was excellent. The service perfect and new location very nice. It had started to fill up by the time that we were finished our early breakfast.

LOST DOGS OF ZACATITOS MY GUITAR. The Lost Dogs of Zacatitos was formed in 2008 by a number of people living in Zacatitos on the East Cape. With Josh Child on lead guitar and vocals, Herb Mullen on bass guitar and vocals, and Chris on drums, the band has a great repertoire of both rock and roll hits and original songs, often about life on the Baja. Some of the audience favorites include Grateful Dead hits. The Lost Dogs of Zacatitos recently played at Shade Beach Bar and Grill in La Fortuna to an enthusiastic audience.

Here is their original song, My Guitar. Enjoy!

SHADE AT LA FORTUNA BEACH BAR AND GRILL. La Fortuna has become the center of restaurants on the East Cape. Zai Sushi Surf Bar, Ozzy's Beach Bar, Lateral La Fortuna, La Tiendenita, Restaurante La Fortuna, and Shade Beach Bar and Grill. Shade opened three years ago as the second restaurant in the area. With a menu that includes appetizers - guacamole, ceviche, quesadillas, wings-, salads, tacos, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, pastas, and specials - fajitas, fish, chicken, steaks - and desserts, you can get almost any style of food that you want. The outdoor restaurant has a bar, stage, fire pit with seats and a great view of the Sea of Cortez. With a path back and forth to the beach at La Fortuna, you can enjoy the sun, the sand, the water, and food. Shade also has frequent live music and sometimes movies at night projected on a large screen.

Marcus, the owner greeted us and led us to the table that had been reserved with a view of the stage. The Lost Dogs of Zacatitos were performing the night were there with Josh Child on lead guitar and vocals, Herb Mullen on bass guitar and vocals and Chris on drums. The play a range of great rock, like the Grateful Dead, as well as their own original tunes.

After looking at the menu, we ordered some guacamole to start, which had tomatoes and onions mixed into the avocado at the base with a large plate of tortilla chips. Beth decided on a Margarita pizza, and I chose chicken fajitas with flour tortillas for our main courses. Both were excellent and well-priced (costs are a little higher on the East Cape as everything has to be brought out from San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas).

The service was great, the atmosphere pleasant, the music fun, and the view both during the day as the sun went down terrific.

WALLY SZYIKO ARTIST. I recently visited the Christmas Bazaar at the Plaza beside the OXXO on the frontage road by La Comer in San Jose del Cabo. In the back corner in one of the rooms was a display of artwork by Wally Szyiko that included paintings and greeting cards based on them. The greeting cards were the perfect size to fit in a 5" x 7" frame as a piece of art. I had the opportunity to speak with Wally and his wife Louise to learn more about his passion for art.
Wally Szyiko is a self-taught artist working in Canada and Mexico. Wally also joined an art class with well-known Todos Santos artist Ezra Katz. As an artist and a photographer, he has an excellent eye for composition, color and light. His interest is sparked whenever a particular scene displays a unique perspective or offers a new insight into the character of a place, person, or thing. Story telling through the images he selects is enhanced by the openness of his canvases.
Each painting invites the viewer to see something that perhaps they've passed by but didn't notice. He loves spending time in nature, walking, cats, golf and his family.
The photos below provide a sample of his style of painting and the display at the Christmas Bazaar in San Jose del Cabo.

GR**GO GROCERIES PREPARING FOR OUR HOMEOWNERS DINNER. On Thursday we held a meeting of all the homeowners in Pueblo Campestre Phase 2 followed by a dinner at the pool and a concert by Chris Paulson from Todos Santos. While everyone was bringing something to share at the dinner, we decided to pick up some special food at Gr**go Groceries. The store offers special beef from Rancho el 17, which began operations in 1991 with only 300 heads of cattle, setting the goal of achieving national supremacy in meat quality.
In 2004, they began exporting to the Japanese market with the quality programs Choice, Prime and Natural Beef. In 2005, it was certified as a JAS (Japanese Agriculture Standard) company and became the first and, for many years, the only company in America to have such certification. In 2017, they achieved TIF certification in their production plant and in 2019, they begin to export to the United States. The beef is frozen, and vacuum packed before shipping.

I selected three New York, three Rib Eye, and three T-bone steaks for our event and a neighbor with the most elaborate outdoor kitchen prepared them. The steaks were thawed and then a Breville sous vide was used to cook them all to temperature at the same time and then they were pan seared. To meet the temperature taste of most people, they were cooked to medium. They were then sliced on a cutting board at the pool, and everyone tried the different cuts of meat. They were tender, delicious, and cooked to perfection. Thanks Jim.

I also picked up apple and blueberry gluten free pies at Gr**go Groceries to add to the selections for dessert.

With all the appetizers, salads, and other items brought by the neighborhood it was a feast. The evening was topped off by 90 minutes of great music from Chris Paulson.

OSTERIA 107 IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. in the well-known location on the corner of Manuel Doblado, one block from Antonio Mijares Blvd in downtown San Jose del Cabo, Osteria 107 is an authentic Italian restaurant with a very pleasant atmosphere, great food and service. Cristiano, the owner and manager is Italian and has launched restaurants in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. He brings his experience to this new San Jose del Cabo restaurant.

Osteria 107 blocks the space in front of the restaurant for guests. So, after parking we entered the restaurant and were greeted by Cristiano, who introduced himself and asked if we would like to site outside in their open-air courtyard or inside. We chose an inside seat near the beautiful bar. We were brought menus and asked what we would like to drink. I chose my regular Chardonnay and Beth asked for a a sparkling water with lime. The menu has a wide range of traditional Italian dishes including pastas and pizza as well as seafood and meat selections.

For an appetizer, we decided to choose the Caesar Salad (with the fresh parmesan on the side). The dressing was perfect, and it was easy to taste the hint of anchovy in it. For our main courses, Beth selected the grilled shrimp with a cauliflower purée and some grilled zucchini. There were nine shrimp on skewers, which had been marinated before cooking, and the flavor was amazing. I decided on the parmesan risotto with black truffles. The creamy risotto was delicious with the flavor of the truffles coming through clearly in the creamy sauce.

We had a nice conversation with Cristiano about our common experiences where we had had a restaurant of 5th Avenue, the main walking street. The food was excellent in both presentation and flavor. The service was friendly and very attentive. We had a great dinner, after being out for a fundraising event beforehand. This is a great new addition to the restaurant scene in San Jose del Cabo, having won awards on Trip Advisor, Open Table, and five-star reviews on Google.

CHRIS PAULSON SUMMERTIME. We were lucky enough to have Chris Paulson join us at the pool in Pueblo Campestre Phase 2 to perform after our homeowner's meeting. Chris has been a wandering minstrel for over 35 years playing in plazas and parks around the world. He spends his summers at his home in France and visiting his son and grandchild in Germany and his winters at his home in Todos Santos. Chris performs Monday nights at La Morena and often joins other great musicians at Bezos de Mezcal in Pescadero, Poke Loko and Landi's in Las Tunas. Chris also offers sunset concerts on the roof of his home, Casa Barbara with special guests. His repertoire of folk, rock, blues, and R & B always guarantees a great evening of entertainment.

Here is his version of the classic George Gershwin song from Porgy and Bess, Summertime. Enjoy!

TABA BBQ FOURTH ANNIVERSARY. We first met Chef Kris Kabush when he was serving takeout BBQ from his house in San Jose del Cabo during weekends during the pandemic. We knew he was a great chef and learned that he was an Executive Chef from Vancouver, BC and had been the Executive Chef at District Mx. For his fourth anniversary of Taba BBQ, he was joined by another incredible chef, Alex Branch, who's latest venture is Nao in San Jose. Together they created a fusion of their styles for the fixed three course menu for the anniversary celebration.
When we arrived, we were greeted by both Chef Alex, who was in the kitchen and Chef Kris, who was meeting all the guests to his anniversary celebration and led to a large table in the indoor dining area of the restaurant. There was a guest mixologist for the evening, Fernando Luna of Zenna in Palmilla, and we were offered the special drink menu and the menu for the evening.

Unlike many fixed menus where you choose from the items available for each course, with this event, you received each of the four dishes of the appetizer and main courses of the meal. The food, flavors, and presentation of each item were amazing. For the appetizer course, the impact of Chef Alex was clearly seen. The four items on this course were: Tuna and Spicy Kimchi Tostada with salted peanut spread and puffed rice; Crunchy Smoked Pork Belly Chicharron, creamy shrimp ceviche with habanero ash and avocado; Cheddar Hushpuppies with jalapeno cowboy candy and a smoked lobster roll with chipotle compound butter and pickled celery. Each of these dishes had a surprise and were excellent. The tuna was like a tuna tartar but with the interesting flavors added by the kimchi and salted peanut spread. The pork belly chicharron looked like a small piece of toast and was complemented by the very creamy ceviche. The hushpuppies added the Texas flavor of Taba, with some jalapeno for a little added spice. The mini lobster rolls were also delicious. The appetizers could have been a meal in and of themselves.

Then came the main course, which was clearly from Chef Kris' repertoire. Prime Flatiron smoked low and slow and served with chimichurri; Taba's signature puffy taco with lechon, tomatillo and avocado salsa with pickled onion; Taco olvidada with smoked pork beans, ceviche and pickled onion and Taba-style barbacoa tostada, onion soubise, serrano cream and queso cotija. Once again, every item was amazing. The flatiron steak was soft and juicy and great even without the added flavor of the chimichurri sauce. The puffy taco is always a surprise just by the look of it but the flavor did not disappoint either. The crispy tacos had a little spice to them and complemented the other items in the main course. The meat in the barbacoa taco was clearly cooked for hours and was tender and delicious.
During the evening, we not only enjoyed our wine but were entertained both by DJ Doozy, who has performed and produced music around the world and by the live vocals of Monique, and expat who has been in Los Cabos for 11 years backed up by a great guitarist.

The final course was the very tart signature key lime pie of Taba BBQ. When we we arrived each of us was also given a ticket for a raffle. At the end of the evening, tickets were drawn for a whole range of prizes, and we won a bottle of the Jim Beam Bourbon that had been used in many of the special cocktails of the evening.
It was an absolutely amazing night. We also found out that Chef Alex Branch is moving Nao to the former French Riviera location in downtown San Jose del Cabo and will re-open in January. This is a great place kitty-corner from Osteria 107, just a block from Plaza Mijares.

TIERRA SANTA SEAFOOD AND GRILL IN LA PLAYITA ON THE EAST CAPE. A new family-owned restaurant opened in November in La Playita across from the beach past El Ganzo Hotel. The restaurant, Tierra Santa took over the location previously occupied by Cassanto. Open from 2:00 to 10:00 pm Thursday to Monday is a new hidden gem with a great menu, pricing and service.

Entering the big gates, there is a lounge seating area to the left and a large outdoor bar to the right. Dining is outdoors with comfortable tables and a banquette along the left wall in the dining area. The full kitchen is at the back of the restaurant. The menu is simple offering two soups, two salads, four dishes from the sea and three on the grill as well as two desserts and a full bar for beverages. While the menu may appear limited, the choices are great.

For appetizers, Beth selected the Baby Salad. It is small baby lettuce with a honey mustard dressing, goat cheese, cranberries, and walnuts. As Beth is lactose intolerant she asked for no cheese. The portion was very large, and she said the flavors were excellent. I chose the Ceviche toast as my appetizer. It is an unusual and excellent ceviche of the catch of the day, black olives, tomatoes, and onions on a crisp tostada. It is a big mound of ceviche, and the flavor was unique and delicious.

For our main course, Beth ordered the Breaded Oriental Taco. There were two large rolls in flour tortillas filled with breaded shrimp and sautéed vegetables in a soy sauce. It was served with a side salad. I chose the Portobello Burger. Unlike many mushroom burgers, this is a single large portobello mushroom that is filled with cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, a tomato slice, and two ramekins of pickles and jalapeno peppers to add to taste. The burger was served with large cut French fries. It was huge and the flavor was amazing. It fact it was so big that I took half of it home. We were too full to sample the desserts.

For those that want something more substantial for a main course, the menu also offers salmon with rice and plantain or grilled arrachera steak with potatoes. All of the preparations of Tierra Santa's food are unique and guided by Mariana Garcia, a owner and wife of Gerardo Salinas, owner, husband and father of the staff at the restaurant. The service was terrific.

If you are looking for a new place to go for a late lunch or dinner, Tierra Santa should be at the top of your list.

PANACHE WITH FRIENDS. A European restaurant located on 20th of November (diagonal road just past McDonalds) is one of our favorite restaurants in Los Cabos. The new location offers more seats and an air-conditioned interior dining space. Brenda, the owner and manager is a force of nature, making sure that all her customers have a great experience.

We brought a group of friends from Los Angeles, who visit once a year and want to try the best restaurants in the area. The seven of us reviewed the great menu of European (French and Italian) delights. Diners can choose from appetizers like deviled eggs, stuffed mushrooms, escargot, salads, and charcuterie platters. For entrées there are several pastas with different sauces and proteins, steak frites, chicken cordon bleu, pork shank, almandine filet, and more.

The dinner started off with our drinks - cocktails, wine, and sparkling water - and warm buns and butter. This group loves to sample and share appetizers, so a number were ordered for the table. The choices included deviled eggs, escargot, burrata salad, artichoke, and Caesar salads. The presentation and flavors were amazing. I love the deviled eggs and have them every time that we visit Panache. The escargot was in the shell with the special tools to pick them up and extract the snail in lots of garlic butter. The burrata was coated in sliced almonds and fresh parmesan and on a base of lettuce and tomato sauce. The steamed artichoke was served in a warm pan with a blue cheese sauce. The Caesar Salad has a very traditional dressing and is enough for two (we had two orders). Everyone tasted all of them and had their favorites.

The choices for the main course were also diverse. Two of us selected the Carbonara Pasta, which was a large portion with the egg and bacon flavors coming through the creamy sauce. Beth chose her favorite steak frites served sliced with a peppercorn sauce and crispy fries. The pork shank was served with mushroom gravy and mashed potatoes. It is huge and the meat just falls off the bone. The Chef Linguine Pistachio has large shrimp and mushrooms mixed with the pasta in their famous pistachio sauce. Another person enjoyed the four large chicken cordon bleu rolls accompanied by mashed potatoes. The final entrée selected was the Frutti de Mare - fettuccine served with a variety of seafood - catch of the day, shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops, calamari - in a lemon butter creamy sauce. The portions at Panache are very generous and so the table was tasting everyone else's selection, and a fair amount went home.

The dinner ended with the signature Tiramisu, which is huge and enough for the table, and an apple tart with ice cream. We all enjoyed a taste along with some limoncello. What a meal!

The restaurant was packed, so reservations are a must. The food quality, presentation, and portions are incredible. The service is among the best in Los Cabos and the prices are very reasonable. The valet parking makes it easy to come and go.

MONARCH EFFECT FOUNDATION FIRST ANNIVERSARY. The Monarch Effect Foundation, which was granted its Mexican tax-deductible status in November 2023, mentors and supports high-potential students of middle-class Mexican families to achieve their dreams of a high-quality university education in Mexico and abroad. The Foundation's vision is that the only way that entrepreneurs and companies in Baja will prosper and grow is if they have well-educated, motivated professionals to take their businesses to the next level. This requires the education of the middle class.

Today, more and more of the resorts, developments, businesses, and even restaurant chains are advertising for trained staff at universities in mainland Mexico, the United States and Canada - because they are not available in Baja. The lack of readily available educated and skilled middle management, professional, and technical staff dramatically impacts the success of entrepreneurs and businesses in the area. Choosing employees who can speak English to serve tourists and expats alike is not enough if they do not have the knowledge and skills to do their jobs well and take their companies to the next level.
Unfortunately, unlike the United States and Canada, there are no readily available sources of money to cover the tuition and living expenses associated with attending a high-quality university. Banks do not offer student loans with long-term repayment after graduation. Consequently, many Mexican middle-class families cannot afford to support their children (or more than one child) to attend university.

For Monarch Effect Foundation to succeed, it is about much more than just scholarships. The program starts early, selecting high-potential students from middle-class families and mentoring them through choosing a career and education path, prepare them to face the challenges of being away from home and family at university, and to learn the skills necessary to succeed both at school and at work after graduation.

To achieve these goals, the commitment and participation of the local Mexican community is essential. Parents, local families and local businesses play a vital role acting as mentors, being part of a speaker's series about career specialties, industries, and what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur, connecting friends and businesses to provide internships and other learning opportunities when the students return between semesters. The current students in the program are also acting as peer-to-peer mentors to future students.

On November 26th, Monarch Effect Foundation held an event on the second floor of Jardin Secreto in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo to define to its donors, sponsors, parents and supporters how the Foundation measures success, and to describe the activities of the past year. There are currently five students attending university in five countries - Portugal, France, UK, United States, and Mexico. Two are in master’s programs and three have completed a least one full year abroad with the Foundation’s support. Three students in the program graduated this year - one from university and two from high school. Student support ranges between $12,000 and $30,000 per year to cover tuition, living and related expenses. All have some type of scholarships from their chosen universities.

There are now a total of 21 students who are involved with the Monarch Effect Foundation, either in university currently or as part of the mentoring program preparing them to achieve their educational dreams. This fall, the Monarch Effect Foundation launched a College Prep Mentoring program that runs for two semesters, held three Wednesdays a month at Picacho McGregor School in San Jose de Cabo. Students from five of the local high schools are participating and pay a small fee to guarantee their commitment to the program. A total of 15 volunteers (many teachers) run the sessions that are part of this program. The program is designed to address self-discovery, goal setting, financial literacy, exam preparation, homesickness, leadership, and career paths. The selection process with the students and their parents was extensive. An additional seven students are involved in the Peer-to-Peer mentoring program each Sunday, run and attended by students in university or about to start.

The goal of Monarch Effect Foundation is to fill the financial and support gap that faces high-achieving, middle-class students in Los Cabos. While there are lots of foundations to support poor and needy children, these students do not qualify. Monarch Effect Foundation works with parents, universities, and the community to fill the gap. All the students have (or will have) scholarships and parental financial support, but still need help with living expenses, internships between terms, and at times, partial tuition. The parents and the students also commit to pay back part of the support after graduation and to volunteer to support the community on an ongoing basis. Monarch Effect Foundation is in the final stages of being granted 501c (3) charitable status by the IRS in the United States, which allows them to approach other foundations and grant a full tax deduction.

For more information about the Foundation and all their current students, visit their website at https://monarcheffect.org/ or visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550657456806

PENCA COCINA DE BRASA. We watched with interest as Rock & Brew was transformed into Penca Cocina de Brasa (Charcoal Kitchen) at the west end of Plaza de Pescador in the Hotel Zone in San Jose de Cabo. They added a large outdoor deck to the two levels of indoor dining in the restaurant. They did a great job with the renovation making the restaurant look very inviting. I hadn't been there until I saw a Facebook post that Daline and Diego would be performing on the regular Saturday night Jazz entertainment.

The server me led me to a table close to where the band was set up on the east end of the outdoor deck. The menu offered a wide range of appetizers, many of which were seafood oriented - oysters, tuna tartar, ceviche, calamari, octopus, and lobster - as well as two salads, some grilled organic vegetables, and a rib eye chicharron. The main dishes included a variety of tacos, prime rib, pork belly, fish and chips, chicken, catch of the day, a hamburger and chicken burger, octopus, and two pasta dishes.

I decided to start with the Tuna Tartar, which was served with pearl onions, roasted pineapple, avocado, and jalapenos in bonito flakes juice. For $470 mx, I was disappointed. Both the portion size and the flavor did not match many of the tuna tartar dishes at other restaurants in Los Cabos. For a main course, I ordered the fish and chips. This was prepared with the catch of the day and served with wedge potatoes and a chili tartar sauce. There were two large pieces of battered fish, which were good, especially with the tasty tartar sauce. I decided to finish off my meal with the brownie and ice cream. The brownie was covered with a thick chocolate icing. it was quite good.

The best thing about the evening was the entertainment. The Diego Ramirez Trio with Daline Jones Weber on vocals gave an outstanding performance of jazz standards and jazz versions of pop and R & B hits. With solos on keyboards, standup bass and drums, each of the tunes was delightful. They even performed some original songs.

Overall, the atmosphere at Penca Cocina de Brasa was very pleasant, the entertainment amazing, and the service was very good. I found the menu quite expensive overall compared to many other local restaurants and the food mixed.

The History Leading to Enjoy Los Cabos Life

Having been a part-time resident of Los Cabos since 1992, we have seen tremendous changes to the region. In the early days, roads were washed out every year; there were few places to shop and even the restaurants were limited. Now, Los Cabos is truly an international resort destination. For those of us who live here many of the difficulties of day-to-day living are gone. Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and great grocery stores have arrived. Some don’t like the development but tourism has brought many benefits to Los Cabos.

We decided to launch Enjoy Los Cabos Life because there really are few outlets that provide much more than listings of where to go and what to do. Much of the information has also focused primarily on Cabo San Lucas rather than all five regions of Los Cabos - The East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, the Corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific side including Todos Santos. Over time, we hope to be able to provide good information, photos, videos and interviews that will showcase the places, people and lifestyles available in Los Cabos. We hope to launch a full website (enjoyloscaboslifestyle.com) late in 2019. If you have comments and suggestions, please email us at [email protected]
