The City of Brunswick, MD

The City of Brunswick, MD The Mayor & Council meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Visit www.brunswickmd.gov for more information. Brunswick began as a stop on the C&O Canal.

Soon, the great steam locomotives of the B&O Railroad replaced the tranquil transit of canal boats, and a boomtown was born. Today, Brunswick serves as a hub of the MARC rail system, carrying passengers into DC's Union Station. Brunswick's unique location makes it the perfect place for outdoor recreation, and a wonderful place to call home.

Exciting News: Downtown Parking Program Details!

We're thrilled to announce our new Downtown Parking Program, designed to make your visits to downtown even more enjoyable!
• Free 2-Hour Parking: From 8:00am to 6:00pm, enjoy free 2-hour parking along West Potomac Street! Please note, this is reserved for visitors and business customers only. Residents and business employees have designated parking on North and South Maryland Avenue, Martin’s Creek Parking Lot, South Virginia Avenue Parking Lot, and the MARC train lot.
• Evening Parking: After 6:00pm, parking is open to everyone, everywhere in the coverage area. Perfect for evening outings!
• Easy Parking Management: Use the Park Mobile app to manage your parking. You'll get an alert when your free 2-hour limit is about to expire, and you can extend your parking time for just $2.00 per hour directly from your phone. This ensures your car is legally parked and hassle-free!
• Resident and Employee Permits: If you live or work on North & South Maryland Avenue, the Unit Block of West Potomac Street, or South Maple Avenue, register your vehicle with City Hall to get a free parking permit sticker. This helps our enforcement officers know who is legally parked. You can register multiple vehicles per address!
• Loading/Unloading Zone: We've introduced a trial loading/unloading zone at the corner of West Potomac Street and South Maryland Avenue. This will help keep delivery trucks from blocking the street. Residents and business owners can use this zone for up to 15 minutes if it's not in use.
• Grace Period: To help everyone adjust, enforcement officers will issue warnings only through March. Full enforcement begins April 1, 2025.

ATTENTION – Snow Emergency Route in Effect for Sunday, January 19, 2025 – 7:00am

Due to the forecasted snow, the City of Brunswick is enacting the Snow Emergency Route along Potomac Street effective Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 7:00am. Vehicles must be removed from Potomac Street from Delaware – First Avenues by this time. Residents will be notified when the Snow Emergency Route has been lifted.

Please also keep the following in mind:

*Refrain from parking at the end of dead-end streets, as snow plows have no place to push snow.

*If you have off-street parking please move vehicles there prior to the start of any snow event.

*Public Works crews open main roads first, then side streets, then alleys. They often make multiple passes on streets, concentrating first on opening as many streets as possible, then coming back later to widen the drive lane further as time allows. If you open your driveway between Public Works passes, you run the risk of having your driveway plowed back shut with the second pass.

*Check on and assist elderly or handicapped neighbors throughout snow events.

*At the conclusion of a snow event, residents are responsible for clearing the sidewalks abutting their properties. Don’t throw shoveled snow into the roadway. Code Enforcement will be monitoring cleared sidewalks after the completion of snow events. Please refer to the post on this page dated December 19th for a full list of the City’s snow removal regulations.

Frederick County to Co-Host Tax Credit Workshop for Historic Properties

FREDERICK, Md. - Members of the public are invited to attend a historic preservation tax credit workshop Monday, January 13 at 7:00 PM in the Community Room of the C. Burr Artz Public Library at 110 East Patrick Street in Frederick. Attendees will learn about programs that may be available for the rehabilitation of historic properties. The workshop will be hosted by the Maryland Historical Trust, the City of Frederick Planning Department, and the Frederick County Division of Planning and Permitting.

There are programs available at the state, county, and local levels to support the rehabilitation for historic properties. These initiatives offer resources such as grants, tax incentives, and technical assistance to help preserve and restore historic structures whiles maintaining their cultural and architectural significance. Each program has its own set of benefits, restrictions, and requirements, which will be highlighted in the upcoming workshop.

The Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit Program encourages the preservation and rehabilitation of historic properties throughout Maryland by providing 20% tax credits for qualified rehabilitation projects. These tax credits are available to both owner-occupied residences and commercial properties, but all projects must be reviewed and approved by the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) prior to undertaking any work to be eligible. While this state tax credit may be used in conjunction with local historic tax credits, MHT review is independent of local review and may not be waived or substituted for local approval.

Frederick County recently enacted a new Historic Preservation tax credit for properties that have been locally designated by either the County, the City of Frederick, or the Town of New Market. This program allows for a 25% credit on eligible exterior expenditures. Applications for this program are due April 1, 2025.

The City of Frederick’s Historic Preservation Property Tax Credit is available for properties in the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone – either individually or as a district. This program allows for a 25% credit on eligible exterior expenditures. Applications for this program are due April 1, 2025.

If you need special accommodations for the upcoming workshop, please call 301-600-1147 no later than Friday, January 10. Additional questions or concerns may be directed to Amanda Whitmore, Livable Frederick Historic Preservation Planner, at [email protected] or 301-600-1147.
