Did you guess the Scrogg's House for yesterday's trivia question?

The Scroggs House

John Scroggs first bought the lot in the spring of 1839 from the original town lots, of Norton and Kilbourne. Today, not one of the original lots is in the hands, of any of the original owners, descendant. The lot that has been longest in the same family is the Scroggs lot (south-east corner Walnut and Rensselaer).

The lot went from John Scroggs into the possession of his son Jacob who built the present residence in 1873. On his death, and the death of his wife, it came into the possession of his son Charles J. Scroggs who passed away in 1944. His wife resided there until her death. Their only child, Betty, married and, living in Nashville, Tennessee, sold the house to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in 1966. However, when the Bucyrus Historical Society organized in 1969 and was seeking a home with historical background, it purchased the Scroggs house from the church, in 1970.

Betty returned many of the beautiful furnishings to help in the restoration of the house. Among them were the pier floor-to-ceiling mirror from France, purchased in 1881; the red velvet drapes and cornices in the parlor; the large walnut-framed mirror over the fireplace in the library; and the wrought iron fence, which originally surrounded the house.

On October 24, 1974, the Scroggs House, 202 South Walnut Street, was entered in the United States Department of Interior Register of Historic Places.

The Historical Society Museum boasts a bounty of local and regional antiques, keepsakes and memorabilia, helping to preserve our historical treasures for today and future generations. The Carriage House located behind the home is designed in keeping with the Victorian ambience of the main building. Inside the Carriage House is the unique horse-drawn steam fire engine from our own Bucyrus Fire Department.

NOW HEAR THIS!!! It is less than a month away now. What? Yes, the Bucyrus Historical Society’s annual HISTORICAL DAY will be here on Saturday, July 20th. This year the hours will be from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There will be newly arranged exhibits to see indoors at our Scroggs House museum plus various “events” on the grounds outside, including a “beefed-up” antiques roadshow-like appraisal service and more. Additional details about all of the other “goings on” to follow, so watch for them here and elsewhere. For now, mark the date on your calendar and start looking for those “mystery” antiques to bring by.
