Directions to the Cabin:
From Porterville, drive for about 1/2 hour, take Hwy 190 past Lake Success; past the Forest Service offices (on the left) where you can stop in for information; through Springville; up and up and winding up; past Coffee Camp and the Power Plant; past Pierpoint Springs on the right to the bank of mailboxes on the right where there is a tricky intersection; past Camp Nelson itself, through Belknap Campground to the tree on the right with the signs naming: Gibson, Rodriguez, Lord and Lagdon; to the bottom of the loop driveway and park; walk across the boardwalk, across the river bridge, up and slightly left and you're there!

Once a year, somewhere along the River, but, in my experience near Belknap, the lady bugs swarm in their millions. You can't walk for squashing them underfoot and a quick swipe along a tree branch yields amazing results. I can smell them now!

If you have a couple of hours to spare and are looking for something spectacular to do... Go to Dome Rock for some amazing scenery and you could always take in a meal at the bar/diner at Ponderosa. Back at the mailboxes on the highway, continue up the mountain. Dome Rock is at just over 7000 ft elevation and just 2-3 miles further than Ponderosa. There is a car park on the left and only 100 yards/metres easy walking to the top of the Rock.

This was a favorite trick of the Gibson Girls when we were young and naughty (now we are the opposite: old and naughty):- to try to convince the unsuspecting to eat choke cherries. These things strip every ounce of saliva from your mouth. Not even the birds eat them, just bears. Don't believe me, come on and try some. Just a little taste. You know you want too ;)

Okay, call us crazy, but we like to sniff trees: the Ponderosa Pines and the Jeffrey Pines, just look for puzzle bark.

Soda Springs water is perfectly potable natural Perrier-style mineral spring water. It may not look like much and it may not be to everyone's taste, but if you are into healthy, natural mineral water and would like some for free or are just curious about natural springs, then bring a cup or bottle and stop by on your way to/from the cabin.

LAUNDRY. There are towels, sheets and dish towels at the cabin, but as it can be humid and the mice sometimes get in the boxes for nesting, we recommend you bring your own. If you use the cabin supplies, you will need to wash and dry them and re-stash them on the plastic bins against the mice. There is a launderette at Camp Nelson and laundry soap under the sink. In July 2014 the washer took $1.75 in quarters and the dryer $1.00 in quarters per cycle, but it takes 2 cycles. Thus a load cost $3.75 in quarters and may be subject to change.
