We’ve said it before, tourists are looking for experiences. So it only makes sense that visitors are throwing out generic “everything but the kitchen sink” trips, and planning vacations that align directly with their interests. Travelers in destinations (or those going to a string of destinations) want opportunities that match their passions. Thus, niche market tourism is a great way to grow visitation to your destination.

This week on the show, Nicole Mahoney sits down with Andy Clinton, CEO of Visit York County, SC, for a fascinating conversation on how thinking differently can make a huge difference to a destination’s success.
The conversation covers:
- Techniques to grow website traffic from 500K to over 2 million page views annually
- The power of reaching out to other destinations for benchmarks and best practices
- How collaborations with local partners are driving economic growth and enhancing the visitor experience

Andy also shares how Visit York County uses geolocation data to provide insights to local businesses about their customer base, such as the percentage of visitors from outside the county and the number of different states that customers are coming from. This approach allows businesses, such as restaurants, to see the tangible benefits of tourism and understand its significant impact on their businesses.

Travel is an incredibly life-enriching and rewarding experience, yet it is still inaccessible to many people. About 15 percent of the world’s population live with different forms of disabilities. Without widespread accessibility in the tourism industry, this segment remains untapped. This not only limits individuals who are unable to access destinations or services on their own terms; it also holds back attractions and businesses from the $13 billion of annual spend within this market. It’s time for travel professionals to prioritize initiatives that make experiences more inclusive. In our blog this week, let’s look at how you can add accessibility while driving positive traveler experiences.

Wellness travel is no longer just a buzzword – it’s a movement. Travelers today aren’t content with vacations that leave them feeling like they need a vacation. Instead, they are seeking deeper experiences that restore balance, nurture the body and mind, and leave them genuinely refreshed. This is where wellness travel shines.

As this trend continues its upward trajectory, it will redefine the broader tourism landscape. The shift from indulgence to mindfulness, from escapism to purposeful exploration, reflects a global evolution in how we view health and happiness. For industry players, now is the time to embrace this change and lead the charge in this transformative travel segment.

Happy New Year!! We are wrapping up our "12 Days of TAP-mas" with a classic 'Christmas adjacent' film (like Die Hard? Hmmm maybe let's not open that can of worms) that spans the holiday season, right through New Year's. Adrienne Currie watches "While You Were Sleeping" every year, enjoying how Sandra Bullock's character falls in love with the quirky Callaghan family and is welcomed with open arms.

Got time for one more classic holiday film in 2024? Our queen of classic movies is TAP team member Sarah Imes, and her all time favorite is White Christmas. She loves old Hollywood glamour, and some of her favorite moments of this movie include the "Mandy" rehearsal sequence, and Rosemary Clooney's character performing at the Carousel Club.
