Toby has been part of coastal California’s wine and food scene for years. After starting his career in the London wine world, and then moving to San Francisco and then Big Sur, he went on to create the world-renowned Big Sur Food and Wine Festival. A seasoned sommelier, Toby lives and breathes all things wine and food and his skills as a raconteur will fully engage you throughout your time here in Carmel as you soak up the unique energy we all enjoy here! Did you know that Clint Eastwood ran successfully for Mayor of Carmel in 1986?

As one of his first acts, he closed the planning board that vetoed the repeal of ice cream prohibition, meaning that residents and visitors could enjoy ice cream in the sun when taking in the beauty of Carmel-by-the-Sea. There’s a lot more we have to be grateful to Clint for, including the nearly $5 million he spent on saving the historic animal sanctuary, The Mission Ranch, from being destroyed by developers.

During his first year in power, he constructed more public toilets and stairways to the beach and expanded the local library. He was so dedicated to his role that even when he was around the world shooting films, he’d still fly back for his weekly council meetings and even had a regular column in our wonderful local paper, The Carmel Pine Cone.
