Greenbrier is a wonderful place to spend time learning! I myself learned so much there! This is a great opportunity to prepare yourself for acquiring a small equine, meeting new friends in the horse community and maybe sign up for some riding lessons til you have your own!!

This shows what proper hood care would look like. I do have shoes on the boys. This protects their feet from excessive wear during our busy winter months. On the shoes is a chunk of carbide steel welded on to keep them from slipping on the pavement in slick winter conditions. It acts like a foot ball shoe cleat. The shoes also keep the hoof a uniform and comfortable shape while preventing chipping and cracking. Trims and resetting shoes happens approximately every 6-8 weeks. That means Joe and Abe are getting mani’s and pedi’s waaay more often than I !!!

The joy of working with my horses must outweigh the sometimes frustrating learning experiences…..it is for those happy moments that I do it!

I once wrote that "while I may be what is called a ‘serious’ horsewoman, I still want to have fun with my horses". For I have seen—both in myself and others—what happens to joy when we fill our cups with nothing but the urge to do better.

The blowback on this statement surprised me.

Half the people were aghast that I wanted to drill the joy from my horses, in the first place. The others were busy trying to convince me that if you’re serious about improving, about making something your life’s work, fun has nothing to do with it.

I happen to disagree with both sides because I love to dwell in the middle. Yes, anything worth doing is worth doing well. I also happen to believe that without joy, what is there?

Lord, have me become a better horse(wo)man. Let me love every step of the way…

I can remember riding in an equitation class as a young girl. That's a long time ago! In the line up, the judge commented, "As for you, you'd do better if you'd wipe that cheesy grin off your face." I have always smiled while riding and can clearly recall that first jab of hurt that comes from being judged in a less-than-kind way. I will say that the old curmudgeon didn't stop me competing, or smiling. I dried my tears and went right back into the ring!

Often folks ask me how the horses handle the cold…… they are better equipped for it than heat as long as they have access to plenty of carbs (hay) to make body heat and some kind of 3 sided shelter facing south(preferred) or east. Lots of times my ponies will be standing on the south side of their shed out of the wind soaking up the warm sun.

When people ask me how long can a horse live, I usually tell them 30 is not uncommon. Take care of their teeth so they can eat properly and that we know so much more about nutrition, especially for the aging horse.

It all started when...

Jeff and I had been Old Thresher’s, ridden on a horse-drawn wagon ride at Christmas in Wyoming, Ia, and gone to an obatacle course in Hudson, Ia and decided that we really loved what draft horses had to offer! We took a carrige ride in Louisville, Kentucky and the driver was a fountain of information for us! We bought our first team of Belgian geldings, Chuck and Charlie, who taught us soo very much about patience, guidence, and having heart! We did some parades, got involved with Brown Farm Pioneer Days, had a couple Christmas gigs and weddings....We found a carriage for sale one night ‘surfing the web’, made a call and a road trip to Princeton, Wi. Two weeks later we made a road trip to Princeton, Ks to purchase Bo and Luke. This happened to be during the course of an amazing Super Moon(also being a Blue Moon) at the end of July in 2015. Driving home with our treasures late at night with that fabulous glow of moonlight, we realized a dream had come true!! (A once in a Blue Moon opportunity). We envisioned a nostalgic, romantic carriage ride through the countryside as our logo. And Blue Moon Carriage, LLC came to be! We are a carriage business, but so much more! It’s the memories, the connections, the chance to accomplish work with very large animals that wouldn’t have to do a thing you asked of them if they didn’t want to....Blue Moon Carriage, LLC provides an opportunity for people to relax, share a moment , or 'remember when' . Make a memory by taking a horse-drawn carriage or wagon ride for your wedding, family picnic, prom, or other Blue Moon occasion!

Blessings to you all,

Jeff and Joann Carnahan and the teams that have served with us.
