Founded in 1680, St. Philip’s is the oldest congregation in the United States south of Virginia. St. Philip’s has played a vital role in the spiritual, cultural, and civic life of the people of Charleston and this nation for over three centuries, and in its churchyard are buried leading patriots who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Often referred to as the “Westminster Abbey of South Carolina,” St. Philip’s has continued to grow and thrive despite the ravages of war, enemy occupations, fires, earthquakes, pestilence, and famine.
In the 17th century, the first edifice of St. Philip’s Church stood at the southeast corner of Broad and Meeting Streets, where St. Michael’s Church (Anglican) stands today. That original site quickly proved to be too small, and a new and much larger church was built at the current location, holding its first services on Easter Day 1723. The congregation continues to worship in that building today.

We have the best guides! Although tour guides are no longer legally required to be licensed, we only hire guides who are members of the Palmetto Guild of Certified Tour Guides. In order to be certified, guides must pass an extensive test facilitated by the City of Charleston and attend recertification classes every three years. #charleston #charlestonsc #historiccharleston #explorecharleston #discoversc #downtowncharleston #lowcountryliving #charlestonpictures #carriageride #charlestonhistory #holycity
Grace Episcopal Church is a perfect example of Gothic Revival architecture in the city. Built in 1846, Grace Episcopal Church’s unique architecture evokes Medieval European cathedrals with its spire, pinnacles and arched windows and doorways. Stained glass windows depicting stories of Christ complete the stunning picture.

It's International Beer Day. Give that horse a beer!
It’s an old equestrian trick to use beer to treat horses with anhidrosis, a condition where horses aren’t able to sweat in order to keep cool. We treat our horses who have anhidrosis with prescribed medication from their vet, and supplement this treatment with beer.
Our horses get about a case a week each during the summer, with two beers in the morning and two in the evening. At Palmetto Carriage Works, we like to give our horses Yuengling Black and Tan iced into their feed.
You may also be wondering whether our horses get drunk off of all of this beer. There’s actually no need to worry about that! Horses have livers that are much larger than ours and are able to metabolize alcohol much faster than humans (which means a couple beers wouldn’t affect a horse like it would you or I).
So next time you see one of our horses enjoying a brew in the summertime, don’t worry! It’s all in a day’s work of ensuring our animals are well-cared for and able to stay cool in warmer weather.
NOTE: The carriage horses are well taken care of and are given regular temperature readings. All horses are under the care of a veterinarian regarding anhidrosis and any kind of treatment.

Check out Watson and Holmes in the news! The Charleston Police Department horses and their partners spent six weeks with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police to learn new skills. Palmetto Carriage Works and Explore Charleston partnered to donate Watson and Holmes to the Charleston Police Department in 2021.
