Catfish Row located at 89-91 Church Street was originally known as “Cabbage Row”. The three story tenement house was built during the revolutionary period and housed many freed slaves families. The top two stories were living quarters while the first floor was used commercially to sell goods, often cabbages on the windowsills, hence the name. Just a few doors down at 76-78 Church Street lived a native of Charleston Dubose Heyward. Heyward was inspired by all that he observed on Cabbage Row and used it as a base for the setting of his book Porgy published in 1925. He changed Cabbage Row to Catfish Row to better suit his book’s setting by the sea. Of course Porgy would become the famous Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess and Cabbage Row would from then on be know as Catfish Row.
