Canberra, known as the "Bush Capital" of Australia sits inland from the coastal cities of Sydney & Melbourne. An area of forest, farmland and nature reserves. A purpose built capital city, tour high lights are Lake Burley Griffin, where you can enjoy sail boating and kayaking, and The National Gallery museum, which houses indigenous art collections of the native Aboriginal people.
For Garden enthusiast, plan your visit for late SEP through OCT and enjoy the annual Floriade Festival of spring blooms. Hot Air balloon fans should plan on a visit in MAR for the Canberra Balloon Spectacular event.

Standing 2.5m high, Hello Koalas’ The Big Koala, sponsored by Regional Australia Bank, is the face of the ground-breaking ‘Guulabaa, Place of Koala’ tourism and educational precinct now open in Cowarra State Forest, alongside adventure park attraction WildNets.

Hello Koalas is a proud partner in the Guulabaa project with NSW Forestry, the Koala Hospital Port Macquarie, Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council and WildNets Adventure Park. Guulabaa will include the Hospital’s wild koala breeding centre and Bunyah’s café and gallery.

This photograph is the start of The Big Koala’s journey to Guulabaa.

Acclaimed fibreglass specialist, John Belfield, who has made all our Hello Koalas sculptures, first in Sydney and since 2017 in John’s River, built a special mould for The Big Koala and prepared it for painting by Port Macquarie artist Pauline Roods in March 2020.

Have you visited The Big Koala yet?

This post has nothing to do with travel, just me having a proud mom moment 🥰
My talented artist-illustrator daughter, Zoe Ranucci, was selected by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to illustrate the 2024 White House Holiday Tour Book. The White House selects a different artist every year for this honor and no two books are alike.

As a final note to this trip to Austria I have to give a shout out to the excellent service recieved on board Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Newark. The crew were warm and friendly, the food impressive and their attention to passenger safety honorable.
Two hours into a 9 hour flight an announcement is made asking "is there a doctor on board?" Another 15 minutes later it is determined the flight needs to make a landing in Dublin to get this passenger the medical attention they need. However a plane full of fuel is not allowed to land due to possible hazard of a hard impact setting off a fire ... So over the Atlantic we flew while the pilot jetsend fuel. Dublin emergency crew were waiting and quickly got the ailing passenger off the plane and on the way to a Dublin hospital. Dublin airport was already prepared to see our plane was quickly refueled. Than we had to wait for a new flight plan to be approved before we could take off to complete the flight to Newark. An unavoidable delay meant many passengers missed a connecting flight. Fortunately I always request LONG layovers so I was able to make mine with 15 minutes to spare. Happy to arrival home safely with such great memories of my time in Austria. Where to next?! ;)

From Piber my guide and I continued on to the UNESCO city of Graz, recognized for it's architecture of buildings both old and new. We walked the steets in the heart of the old city and grabbed a cappuccino and dessert at one of the many side walk Cafe.

One of the highlights of my trip to Austria was paying a visit to the Lippizaner stud farm in Piber. These beautiful white horses are famous from the Spanish Riding School shows in Vienna. They begin life with very dark coats that gradually turn to gray and than after about 5 years are fully white. We saw the stalions, mares and foals and watched a morning training session before a tour of the estate museum and finally a lovely lunch in their Cafe.

Visiting your ancestors homelands is big business these days with many companies like Ancestry.com ready to set up the entire trip for you. I made my own arrangements and with the aid of two locals was able to visit nearby villages, cemeteries and search parish records. I was even able to meet up with 'cousins', descendent of my great grandfather's brothers.

Avalon Waterways tour came to an end after a very rainy 2 days in Vienna. Some passengers headed to the airport and home, others continued to other areas of Europe. I continued with a flight to Klagenfurt to follow up on family genealogical research I have been pursuing for many years. The gale winds were quickly drying up the wet ground but made me nervous to board a prop jet. Our pilot did an amazing job on both take off and landing. Whew! Meanwhile the view from above showed the recent sudden drop of temperatures from 90s to 40s had brought snow to the mountain peaks.

16/09/2024

The heavy rains I have been experiencing in Vienna turned deadly for central Europe. Areas of Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czeck Republic and Poland under disaterous flood conditions. Hoping there is a break in weather soon. 🙏
