Sierra 4 Play

Sierra 4 Play Locally founded 4 wheel drive club open to all. 4-Wheeling club We rely on run leaders to contact others and arrange for their own meeting places.

Unlike most traditional clubs, we are very informal group that corresponds either by phone or e-mail whenever anyone has or would like to organize a run, with each member being responsible for their own vehicle and welfare. With the many trails available to us, the club should satisfy the needs of all levels and abilities. We are meeting once a month, every third Tuesday at 6PM, to talk about past and future runs, and anything else that may come up. We ask that when someone organizes a run that he or she contact all members and make it available to them. Runs of interest could be gold mines, gold panning areas, remote fishing holes, scenic remote areas, radical rock climbing, moderate rock climbing, remote lakes, etc. These can be day or overnight camping trips. Another great advantage is sharing knowledge about jeep/toyota parts and repairs. We hope that all members will network with others and help whenever possible to make everyone’s experience a good one. And remember our motto: NO ONE LEFT BEHIND and NOTHING LEFT BEHIND, meaning who goes out comes back no matter what, and what goes out comes back out!

Hey y'all! Sorry we haven't been on or done much this year, but injuries, truck breakdowns and work schedules have hindered us a bit. However we are planning on doing our Christmas Tree Run on Nov 25th(saturday after Thanksgiving). We will do an official post with meet time and rough idea of where we will go in a few days. Hope so see everyone!

Anyone interested in doing it? It's September 30th. Fun day, great exercise and some wheeling.

Adopt-A-Trail Coordinator here. This year's Fall Trail Day may be a little different than most. Due to lack of available contractors, the LNF didn't do either of the big trail maintenance projects this summer, and they promise next summer. These are the projects that will stop water from running down the roads right into creeks, and do some of the re-routes near Long Lake. So, any trail work we do may just get undone, or improved next summer.

We still want to do the "keep rigs ON the trail" work, and do our standard clean up work with trash and cleaning up fire rings, but big work can wait.

So, I suggest that we do two things: 1) Look a little further off the trail for trash than normal, and 2) take this light work year to go wheel a spot in the High Lakes you have never been to. Try the 519, explore the 615 up to Chambers Creek, get all the way to Ben Lomond, go over to Soda Ridge, make the loop out 616 (Twister) to 617 and go take a look at the switchbacks down the Hwy 70 canyon, or even go try Pipejam (where someone always comes out on a strap). Then come to the bbq and raffle at Spring Valley Lake.

As always, stay on the trail, and if you can't make it, go back and build a rig that can! Individual volunteers can get small assignments in the morning at Spring Valley, or join any one of the clubs while they work on their sections. Have fun this year!

Subject: Lassen National Forest - Five Counties - Forest Revision on unpaved roads

Folks,

As you know, the Lassen National Forest recently announced their intention to revise their travel management plan that was issued in 2009. In the past several weeks the LNF hosted two public meetings to bring the five counties (plus Modoc), elected officials, ROC, and public, up to date on what they are doing to move forward on this revision. It is their intent to reopen unpaved roads for ORV's (OHV) and it is very important to us that this revision creates a seamless transportation system that works with the counties open roads. Most of the Counties were represented, which was very important to show the LNF that they wholeheartedly support this plan.

ROC and the 5 counties (plus Modoc) around the Lassen NF have asked them to do this since 2009. Right now there is a major disconnect between county and FS road management. The 5 counties allow ORV (OHV) travel on their 319 miles of roads through the Lassen, but the FS prohibits it on about 658 miles of their unpaved roads that look just the same as the county roads. Many of these unpaved FS roads connect with the county road system. OHV users have no idea if they are driving legally or illegally on these roads. From the information presented at the two meetings it is obvious that the FS's plan is unworkable and needs to change.

ROC management team prepared the two attached responses after the Lassen NF hosted the two public meetings on May 22-23. Please review them and consider sending your own comments in support of the FS developing a rational road management strategy that's compatible with county road management. The public expects and deserves this kind of coordination. And please consider asking him to establish a coordination council with reps. from the 5 (6) counties, OHMVR Division and CHP that's facilitated by a neutral party. Without this council and people talking to each other, it will be difficult to resolve the difference between county and FS road management.

Please send your comments to analyze the designation of 658 miles of unpaved FS Maintenance Level 3 and 4 roads for mixed use by June 30 to:

Snow update: The snow still easily covers the signs at the T, and is about 14 ft deep there. The top of the signpost at Spring Valley is just starting to show, so about 8 ft in the sunbaked snow there. There is an adventurous set of tire tracks that cross the creek at Spring Valley Lake, and up the other side and beyond. It sure seems like a winch would still have to be involved, but wow!

Here is a update from Nick (Thanks Nick) Lassen National Forest.

Just some indications from the LNF that only one of the two High Lakes projects may get done this summer. As a review, one project is a NEPA-guided project, and that does some re-routes at Long Lake, which we all generally agreed with their final plan, and some re-routes further out the 611. That one is in the SOPA, and is likely to be delayed because the frog analyst left, and they are scrambling for a new one.

The other one, which also uses the last of the Storrie Fire insurance funds, is classified as a trail maintenance project, and does not need NEPA, but does need approvals and permits from the Army Corp of Engineers because it is working within the creek crossings. Basically, much of that rock we placed in there is not really working that well, and while they have this money, they want to regrade many of the road approaches to streams to stop water running down the road. That is still on track to do this summer, and that work would be done by a NF Enterprise team. The trails maintenance project is likely the most disruptive.

Also, Spring Valley Lake is now officially in the LNF, so that means that officially we can have campsites around the lake and take care of them.

Finally, the place is still buried in snow, around 10-14 feet, with more on the way. The sign at the T is still buried. After that first set of washouts on Smokin’ Duck Rd down low, which are getting easier for the moment until they suddenly get really difficult when more snow washes away, are the last real obstacles on the way to the T.

We need an answer on if someone would like to take over the committee for friday morning breakfast being that Thor and I are no longer able to go. If you are interested and going and KNOW that there will be enough in the group to do it, Please contact Bill Ellis.

07/11/2016

Well Thor and I are super bummed....we can not make it to Sierra Trek this year. Things just didn't work out in our favor to be able to make it. So with that being said-is there someone who is willing to take over committee? Please let me know so that I can email them and tell them. Thanks

Friends of the High Lakes

It's been a while since Thor and I have gone up. Anyone interested in making a day run? Can't be until after July 10th. Next 3 weekends are booked.

Big Kudos to the crew who cleared the 611 and spurs all the way out to Ben Lomond. Great job. The south end is also all clear thanks to the South Side Keepers. Still some wet trails, so make sure to go through any puddles to avoid widening the trail. Yes, your rig can handle a little mud puddle.

06/20/2016

Saturday River run peeps? Friday morning breakfast? Who's in so we can get a head count and pass info on to the Sierra Trek coordinator?

Trek Committee Registration

Good day all.

We are sending out this years Sierra Trek committee registration once again. If you are a committee head please pass this to the rest of your crew.

http://cal4wheel.com/trekcommittee "Some browsers may require copy and paste"

We have hard copies that can be mailed in but ask to do registration online as much as possible, the reason for this is ease, tracking and reports.

The earlier that everyone signs up the easier it is for ordering food and support items for all. Please do not pass this link around to non committee people. If your committee is not shown as an option in the web store please let us know so as to add it.

Future Sierra Trek planning meetings are as follows.
June 21st
July 19th

Work day for packing trailers is Sat July 18th @ 0800 Cal4 office
Work weekend at Meadow lake is August 6-7

Sierra Trek is being held on August 11 - 14

Winch hill crews, this may be a duplicate due to Bret (Trail Coordinator) handling trail.

Thank you all for being volunteers for this years 49th annual Sierra Trek.

of course we all know this right?
