Friends of the High Lakes
Here is a update from Nick (Thanks Nick) Lassen National Forest.
Just some indications from the LNF that only one of the two High Lakes projects may get done this summer. As a review, one project is a NEPA-guided project, and that does some re-routes at Long Lake, which we all generally agreed with their final plan, and some re-routes further out the 611. That one is in the SOPA, and is likely to be delayed because the frog analyst left, and they are scrambling for a new one.
The other one, which also uses the last of the Storrie Fire insurance funds, is classified as a trail maintenance project, and does not need NEPA, but does need approvals and permits from the Army Corp of Engineers because it is working within the creek crossings. Basically, much of that rock we placed in there is not really working that well, and while they have this money, they want to regrade many of the road approaches to streams to stop water running down the road. That is still on track to do this summer, and that work would be done by a NF Enterprise team. The trails maintenance project is likely the most disruptive.
Also, Spring Valley Lake is now officially in the LNF, so that means that officially we can have campsites around the lake and take care of them.
Finally, the place is still buried in snow, around 10-14 feet, with more on the way. The sign at the T is still buried. After that first set of washouts on Smokin’ Duck Rd down low, which are getting easier for the moment until they suddenly get really difficult when more snow washes away, are the last real obstacles on the way to the T.
