Eleusis

Eleusis "A space for the female imaginary." Eleusis is a group of Chicago-based artists, working in the theatre, literary and multimedia arts..

Summer Workshop:

We plan to work within the community of Rutland, VT, to provide a summer feminist arts workshop to local adolescent girls, with a curricular focus on the visual, performance, and literary arts. Over the course of four weeks, we will lead the girls in ensemble-building, improvisation, participatory theatre, and storytelling, safely engaging adolescent girls in otherwise risky conv

ersations while making theoretical issues tangible and active. Through this process, we will help the group practice living conversations, asking questions, and interrupting negative influences. At the end of the workshop, the girls will write and stage short pieces based on their own experience. The Rutland Project:

For our first artistic collaboration, we were interested in creating a large-scale multi-media project capturing the collective experience. Using our various backgrounds in sound production, writing, playwriting, visual arts, and documentation, we wanted to capture the unique process of becoming a female collective, this moment in our lives as we learn how to be artists in the world, and the many ideas and artistic projects it inspires. Collective Members:

Claire Redfield is a performer, director, and current teacher at the Tony Award-winning Lookingglass Theatre (http://lookingglasstheatre.org) who has previously trained with SITI Company, British American Drama Academy, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Amanda Faraone is a creative writer, with grassroots non-profit experience working for Shining Hope for Communities, who has recently been published in THE2NDHAND txt, redlight bulbs and the deadline. Alice Quinlan is an independent radio producer, documentarian and storyteller, currently working with Marfa Public Radio in Marfa, Texas, with whom she was a lead producer finalist for the Association of Independents in Radio Localore Project. EllaRose Chary is a writer, performer, dramaturg and activist who has worked with Playwrights Horizons, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, TheatreWorks, and holds an M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU. EllaRose currently serves as the Literary Associate at The Civilians (NYC) .

Closing night of 'King Lear'. We are totally sold out for our final performance! It's been an epic journey and we are so lucky to be working with the most amazing cast and crew.

We also want to introduce, last but most certainly not least, the amazing, wonderful, talented Henry Bolzon who tackled the title role of 'King Lear' and made the winds blow and the storm rage every single night.

"Henry Bolzon (King Lear) is thrilled to be working with Eleusis Collective. Most recently he played the roles of Chamberlain/Cardinal/Vanni in The Life of Galileo at Remy Bumppo. Previously, he understudied the role of Barnard in the world premiere of a play by David Rabe, Good for Otto at the Gift Theatre. Chicago credits include Macbeth (Actor’s Center of DuPage). Sunken Land (Stage Left), Julius Caesar (Next Theatre). Regional credits: The Female Entertainer, Cherry Orchard, Pericles, Hamlet (Denver Center Theatre); Two Gentlemen of of Verona, Henry V (Utah Shakespearean Theatre); and Bent (Arts Club Theatre, Vancouver, Canada). After two decades as a visual artist, he is very happy to be treading the boards or in this case, the fields, again."

Final weekend for Eleusis Collective's production of 'King Lear'. Tickets are going fast, don't miss out!

You can see Zoe Sjogerman as the manipulative middle daughter Regan

"When Zoe was a little girl she would play Cinderella with her Mother, but she would always make her Mom play Cinderella while Zoe preferred to play the evil step-sisters. Two decades later not much has changed and she is so happy to get to perform this role. This is Zoe's third show with Eleusis and she would like to thank the cast and crew from the bottom of her heart for all the hard work, talent and total badassery they bring to the table. Special thanks to Claire for being the very best."

What better day to put on a production of 'King Lear'? Happy Father's Day!

Don't miss your chance to see this show and to see Deanalís Resto's stunning Cordelia.

"Deanalís Resto is a multi-disciplinary, Pennsylvania-Rican artist and activist who earned her Musical Theatre degree from Ithaca College. She is a company member with For Youth Inquiry (FYI), the arts-based program of the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health (ICAH), where she co-devises and performs in participatory plays for youth about sexual health, rights, and identities. She was most recently seen in Theo Ubique’s Jeff Award-winning production of Rent, and is currently collaborating on two original projects; 100 Hauntings with Free Street Theatre, a devised piece about ghosts and hauntings in Chicago, and Epic Tales from the Land of Melanin, a participatory TYA adventure play featuring young heroines of color that will debut at the Chicago Kids Fringe Festival this September! “To my mother in Heaven, and my father on Earth, who have humored, supported, encouraged, and loved me, Gracias por todas las bendiciones.”

"Ray Rehberg (Edmund) is excited to be working with Eleusis Collective for the first time on King Lear! Born and raised in Swarthmore, PA, Ray graduated from Northwestern University and has trained with Young People’s Theatre Workshop and as an ensemble member/producer at Redmoon Theatre. Recent Shakespeare credits include The Rise and Fall of the Mad King of Scotland (MacDuff/Duncan) with Nothing Special Productions, Romeo & Juliet (Tybalt) with Rabid Bat Theatricals, and Twelfth Night (Antonio) and The Wars of the Roses (Richard III/Others) at Northwestern. And now our no less loving son of Albany! Peter Ash

Some decades ago, a healthy baby boy was fished out of the Willamette river. That boy became a man, and that man became Peter Ash. In the years since his descent upon Chicago Peter has appeared in a number of plays, including but not limited to The Mystery of Irma Vep, The Tempest, and The Comedy of Errors. In addition to his duties as an actor, Peter enjoys the poetry of cured meats and idly admiring quality kitchen-ware.

She wears many hats in our production! Introducing Debbie Baños as the Fool/Messengers-

Debbie Baños (Fool et. al) hails from Arkansas. She grew up in a town where there were more farm animals (cows and chickens) then people, though she never owned any farm animals. Some of her Chicago credits include Titus Andronicus with Babes with Blades, Adoration of the Old Woman with Urban Theatre Company, Juan Francisco Villa's Don Chipotle, and A Streetcar Named Desire with Pulse Theatre. Debbie is a Southern first-Generation Salvadoreña-American who is in love with theoretical physics. Her next project is Fefu and Her Friends with Halcyon Theatre.

Next up is Gabriel Fries as the fiery Duke Cornwall-

The first play Gabriel ever acted in was in fact a Shakespeare play. At the tender age of 13, he played Duke Orsino in a homeschool production of Twelfth Night. Gabriel felt a little overwhelmed by the language - to say the least - and from then on regarded the Bard as an inaccessible, obscure figure.

That is, until last year, at the less tender age of 28, he was given a Shakespeare piece in a monologue class. And after sitting with the piece, and working through it, he thought to himself, 'This Shakespeare fellow really writes dialogue that is more direct and emotionally resonant than a lot of modern playwrights! I now comprehend why everyone calls him a genius!'

So when the opportunity to play Cornwall in this production came along, he eagerly accepted, and has immensely enjoyed working with the marvelous crew and cast! Hope to see you at the show!

It's time to introduce our incredible and wonderfully talented cast!

First up is Mark Huddle as Gloucester-

Mark is very happy to play Gloucester in King Lear. Other recent productions include Hamlet (No Stakes Theater), Scissortail (Adapt Theater), and Insert Heart Here (Red Theater). When not acting, he practices law, paints, and studies martial arts, although not simultaneously. Thanks to the terrific cast and crew and to family and friends for your support.
