UC American Society of Civil Engineers

Student organization for civil engineers at the University of Cincinnati.

The University of Cincinnati brings the national ASCE’s visions and goals to the local level. The UC Chapter believes that education, leadership, hands on experience, and field trips help students and faculty have a better understanding on what the future of Civil Engineering looks like. Every year, our freshman class is introduced to a variety of companies and organizations who believe in educati

ng our underclassman with basic knowledge about civil engineering. Our freshmen are able to better understand their chosen career and which discipline they might be interested in. Upperclassmen are also given opportunities to take officer positions and become leaders on campus. Every year UC competes in the Ohio Valley Student Conference which allows anyone to gain hands on experience. Another way for students to get involved is to go on the several field trips that UC plans each year. These are particularly useful for underclassman to fully understand how the real world interacts with the civil engineering career. Overall, the UC chapter is very involved with the students and gives the best opportunities for them to see their chosen profession.

Our ASCE Student Chapter partnered with the Allied Construction Industry Young Professionals group and People Working Corroboratively for the annual Prepare Affair this past Saturday morning. Our students worked with other industry professionals to help prepare homes for winter of fellow Cincinnati residents that are unable to physically or financially do so for themselves. We cleaned out gutters, raked leaves, and did some other minor things around 5 homes with this great team! Wanted to thank Marathon for giving us the opportunity of a tour of their bio-refinery. It was very interesting to learn the history of the plant and how they make the process for clean environmentally safe energy.

Wanted to share our habitat for humanity trip we did last weekend. It was a great time to volunteer and help build a home for a single mother of two children. We had an amazing time and wish you all could join us for the next!

We would like to express our condolences to the family of the late Professor Patrick Fortney. He truly had a passion for teaching and inspired many of us students. We are grateful to have had him present to our student chapter last month on his heavy involvement in professional organizations. Many found him to be a mentor and a role model. He displayed a dedication and work ethic unlike anyone else. This was clear by him deciding to go back to school to get his bachelors and eventually doctorate degree in civil engineering after several years of owning a construction company. The civil engineering student body will thoroughly miss Professor Fortney, he was a beloved teacher and fantastic role model that all the students appreciated and respected for his commitment and love of civil engineering.
