Navicular syndrome
Navicular disease
Pain in the back of the foot

So many names for such a worrying issue in our horses.

In this horse, I found the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) quite damaged with yellow brittle hard tissue where it should glide over the navicular bone. I also found adhesions (strands of tissue) between the DDFT and navicular bone.

The navicular bone was also damaged with yellow colour to the fibrocartilage surface where it meets the DDFT plus pitting and a rough feel.

Bet that hurt.

Horse was lame. I’ll be posting a video of this dissection with more detailed information, to my Patreon page.

Understand Your Horse's Hooves

11/21/2021

EquiSeq is seeking DNA samples from horses that are highly symptomatic and suspected of PSSM2/MFM despite testing negative for the genetic variants in EquiSeq's current Myopathy Panel.

If you have a symptomatic horse that tests negative (n/n) for P2 (MYOT), P3 (FLNC), P4 (MYOZ3), P8 (PYROXD1) and K1 (COL6A3) via EquiSeq's Myopathy Panel, whether through EquiSeq or Generatio GmbH - Center for Animal Genetics, please consider submitting a DNA sample to EquiSeq for a long-term study.

The study has two phases. In the first phase, DNA from such horses will be subjected to whole-genome sequencing to identify potentially damaging variants in a list of candidate genes. A number of such variants have already been identified.

In the second phase, DNA samples from additional horses will be tested for all variants being evaluated.

The results of the study are not expected for at least a year, and possibly longer.

In anticipation of your questions:

1. The criteria for inclusion are: 1) negative (n/n) test results for P2, P3, P4, P8, and K1, either from EquiSeq or Generatio GmbH - Center for Animal Genetics, 2) negative test result for GYS1-R309H (P1), the variant associated with PSSM1, 3) willingness to provide additional veterinary information if requested.

2. Horse owners in the United States will be asked for 10 ml EDTA blood draws done at our expense.

3. Horse owners outside of the United States will be asked to submit a few drops of blood on a dried blood card. We will supply the blood card.

If you are interested in participating, please email Paul Szauter at [email protected] for more information.

Thank you for considering this.

I feel the need to bring this subject up and explain since it’s happened more than once. When I treat a horse and ask for exrays, that is because I need to see what is going on inside the horse’s hooves to see what needs to be done. Often times the vet will take exrays and then take over treatment. Usually meaning special metal shoeing. Once you decide to go with this kind of treatment I am no longer your farrier because this is not the kind of treatment I apply. Horse owners come to me for an alternative treatment because what they are using is not working. Normally I am removing shoes and bringing hooves back to good health. I am not against shoes because I use them too in rubber. My training is different from a metal shoe blacksmith. Please do not be offended if I do not take you back as a client after a situation like this. It’s double jeopardy for me and my time is valuable to my other clients.

To my clients, present and future, I have decided that until this quarantine has passed that I will only be trimming absolutely necessary cases or those that do not require a handler to be present. I care very much about your horses but I care about you as well and the residents at the nursing home I work for. I’m trying my best to make the right decisions for all. I shudder at the thought of anything happening to anyone I know. Please stay safe!! ❤️❤️

EquiBiome

EquiBiome

This is a wonderful video, well worth watching with nothing more to add, if you haven’t got the time, skip to the text below.
The Equibiome test uses the same technology and the analysis and personalized report is summarized and based on published scientific literature. The study of microbiome using next generation sequencing is the most exciting and relevant analytic tool, that will revolutionize equine health in the 21st Century.
5 Good Reasons to Take the EquiBiome Test.
1. The hind gut of the horse is home to a complex community of trillions of important bacteria that provide the following daily critical services.
a) immune response
b) making vitamins
c) make minerals more available
d) interact with the horse through the gut/brain axis, contributing to temperament.
e) make the energy supply needed for exercise.
The Equibiome test will highlight any deficits/imbalances in your horse’s biome, helping you to manage overall health.
2. The Equine gut bacteria community have links to all known diseases and ill health of the gastrointestinal tract, including colic, colitis, diarrhea, ulcers, laminitis and grass sickness. The EquiBiome test highlights imbalances and overgrowths linked to dysbiosis (gut upset and discomfort), this information is then provided in an easy to understand format, allowing you to stay in control of how you manage and feed your horse.
3. Over the counter pro and prebiotic supplements are based on very limited information, whilst the Equibiome prebiotic range is based on the results of your analysis meaning your horse can access what he needs immediately, taking away the trial and error.
4. A high percentage of horses struggle with gastric discomfort, discovering what was going used to be impossible, but now you can see right into the microbial community in real time.
5. Many chronic diseases are on the increase, called syndromes, these are multifactorial with most linked to modern equine lifestyles, management and diet. Biodiversity within the biome provides your horse with health and vitality, most horses lack biome diversity, the EquiBiome test measures and reports on this and helps you to restore a health gut environment.

Just a sneak peek. I have recently been certified for the sure foot pad system which means I am able to do sessions and sell products but I am practicing on my client’s horses for awhile first to get really comfortable with the process. I should be up and running with them beginning of 2020. I’m more than excited about adding this to my service! If you want to know more about them go to

Newest challenge. Collapsed heels, hoof wall fungus, mineral imbalance, severe medial wall loading, in shoes racing around barrels most of his life. Put him on 3 week trim cycle, owner starting CA Trace minerals next week and I put a layer of hoof armor on. I will take pics again in 3 weeks. I might even remember to take before trim shots. :-)

Just removed all 4 of his shoes. Another happy horse!
