The District proudly celebrates Juneteenth, a day of remembrance, reflection, and resilience. June 19th marks a day that we honor the emancipation of enslaved Americans and reaffirm our commitment to equality and justice for all. In honor of the holiday, we're sharing some facts you may not know about the Black pioneers from the past and present who have made significant contributions to our cities.

💐 Marjorie Prothro, who was a florist, was the first Black business owner in the city of Hapeville. Today, the exterior wall of City Hall facing Arts Alley is adorned with a breathtaking mural in her honor titled “Flowers Devine” by local artist Charmaine Minniefield. The mural features big, beautiful florals with a black and white portrait of Marjorie admiring the bouquet of colors.

🏘️ Just last year, local investor & real estate developer Booker T. Washington opened doors to the South Park Cottages, bringing his vision of the first Black-developed micro-community to life right in the heart of College Park. The community of 29 tiny homes, which feature a full kitchen, bathroom and living space, also houses a walking trail, community garden and dog park. Washington’s tiny home community concept has changed the game and made homeownership affordable and attainable for College Park residents. Washington is spreading the love all over the Southside with a second location underway in our very own Union City.

“I always envisioned this is what we deserved.”
❤️💛 💚
