Shifting into Neutral
The desire to operate from a space of peace is at the forefront of many minds as we learn to navigate through life with its ever-winding paths and unexpected obstacles. Sometimes we are carelessly driving down the street when an unexpected child, animal or emergency vehicle causes us to alter our progress by swerving, stopping or pulling to the side of the road. These are the actions we perform without a second thought of the steps prior to or after the unexpected disruption. However, whenever these circ**stances cause us to alter our progress, there is a period in which we must re-group before continuing towards our destination.
This process is identified as a SHIFT and is defined as an exchange, change or movement from one position into another.
Imagine starting a car and preparing to drive to work. When we get in the car, the first thing we should realize is the car is stopped and awaiting our actions in order to begin its purpose. We insert the key in the ignition, check our position for obstacles (other cars, children, pedestrians) and SHIFT the car out of Park into Reverse. As we back out of our driveways, parking spots, etc. we once again must SHIFT into Drive as we proceed down the street.
Now, if you are a driver there should be one immediate thing which you noticed about the above scenario—we never SHIFTED into NEUTRAL although we bypassed Neutral in order to change positions from park…to reverse….to drive.
So, what does this have to do with anything—since I am not sharing this information as a driving instructor?
In life, we are all headed to a destination which requires us to shift our positions, thoughts, relationships, courses, etc. Before shifting occurs, we must understand where we are PARKED: taking an assessment of what obstacles are surrounding our current position. These obstacles may be in the form of self-erected hindrances, other’s opinions, judgments, etc.
Once we recognize our PARKED position, we must REVERSE: go back and EVALUATE the actions which have occurred in our lives to place us in our current position. When we are parked in a garage, driveway, parking spot—it is a necessity to back your car down the same entry point to arrive at the proper position to SHIFT into Drive.
This reversal of action (re-evaluation) allows us to gain a better understanding of the thoughts, ideas, concepts and actions which contributed to our current state of being. Without re-evaluation of our route—we are bound to hit a wall of destruction because we failed to review our own mentality.
When driving towards our destination, we are fully aware of the use of the gas and brakes to increase our rate of progress and/or stop our motion. As Students of Life, we must be secure in our innate discernment of when to increase our speed and when to stop. Not being aware of when to start/stop one’s OWNSELF can lead to being directed and controlled by others. This is equivalent to a ‘back-seat driver’—one who tells you where to go but isn’t in there position to drive there---due to their backseat mentality!
In the event that an unexpected obstacle occurs (stalled car, no gas, skidding on ice) it is essential for us to know how to SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL! The purpose of neutral is to disconnect the transmission from the engine which allows the car to naturally coast into position when faced with unexpected situations.
Spiritually, neutrality disconnects the transmission (OUR WILL) from the engine (SOURCE) in order to allow a natural positioning of our vehicle (SOUL). Since the purpose of a transmission is to transmit power from the engine to the wheels in order to move a vehicle—our WILL transmits the power from the SOURCE in order for our SOUL to be projected forward!
When we shift into neutral—we allow OUR WILL to disconnect from the SOURCE. This allows the Soul to naturally shift itself into position based on the momentum from the SOURCE and not from our individual will! By disconnecting OUR WILL from the process we are no longer providing the ‘energy’ behind our shift—we are allowing our Soul to naturally shift into a higher level of consciousness when unexpected situations occur on our spiritual path.
Not my will but thy will be done!
Many people view neutrality from a negative space because we mistakenly equate neutrality as indecision. However, it is only when we are in Neutral that we are able to detach from stopping/moving in order to maintain an unbiased position to properly view our progress. Ironically, the only two gears in which you can start a car are PARK (Stillness) and Neutral (Detachment).
MORAL:
If we are to allow our Soul to elevate to higher levels of consciousness, we must develop the consistent practice of purposefully driving our lives. Starting from a place of stillness (PARK) allows us to re-evaluate ourselves (REVERSE) and progress (DRIVE) down our individual paths; while realizing detachment (NEUTRAL) is a requirement for our Soul to naturally shift into its purposed position.
Drive Carefully.
