If you ever find a shorebird tangled in fishing line here is very important information you need to know!

Most people that find a bird tangled up in line/hook/tackle (or sometimes find 2 birds tangled up together) have an immediate instinct to want to cut the line and set the bird free. Here's why you should never let the bird go after freeing it from fishing line.

First, you have no idea how long the bird (or birds) have been tangled up. By the time they're found or captured it could have been days of being tangled, which means by now they're suffering not only from emaciation, but severe dehydration, shock and onset of organ failure. Just because the bird is free of the line or flies away after you set him free, does NOT mean hes going to be "OK" now. They simply fly off to go elsewhere and die slowly. An "out of the frying pan and into the fire" type situation. You did not really save the bird if you let them go, and if they can fly even just a little but still need medical care, u have now made re-capture impossible.

Contain the bird and get him to a rehab center asap. Most of the time they need several days of fluid therapy, antibiotics, xrays (they may have swallowed a hook/sinker) pain meds and weight gain before they'll be ok. Also! never try to remove any hooks yourself even if you are a fisherman who have removed hooks before. There's a certain way they need to be removed and oftentimes this requires surgery. Pulling or prying on to the hooks can cause more damage. You can cut loose line to give the bird some relief but never mess with any other parts that are embedded or stuck on the bird. Leave them in, and transport the bird as-is.

There might be some exceptions where you actually personally witnessed a bird flying into fishing line, and there were no hooks and line was just loosely wrapped with no injuries etc, (those are rare situations and even then ideally they need an exam first) but when you find a bird tangled up and you have no idea how long it's been like that DO NOT release the bird. Get him to a rehab center for a proper examination and assessment to see if he is physically well enough to be released.
