Definitely turn the “Lights out”for the turtles!!

A timely repost asking for your help:

We have a favor to ask…

Now that our local sea turtle nests are starting to hatch, we would like to ask everyone staying in oceanfront properties to turn off any indoor or outdoor lights that may be visible from the beach. We are asking this favor because when the hatchlings emerge from their nests, they are very sensitive to light and can become disoriented and follow these residential lights up into the dunes, rather than head down into the ocean. So could you please help us ensure that all our local hatchlings safely make it into the ocean and turn off all outdoor lights on decks and pools, and close the blinds or drapes on all levels of your house after dark ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Please stay at least 50 feet or further away from the Corolla wild horses at all times, and only admire them from afar. Please respect their space and give them room... It is for their safety as well as ours. Please also do not feed, lure, or entice these precious animals as these acts are all dangerous and against the law. We are so thankful that the Corolla wild horses live and roam free here on our beach... They are our treasures and your help is greatly appreciated to keep them WILD and free. If you see cruelty or laws being broken, please call the Currituck County Sheriff at 252-453-8204 or the Corolla Wild Horse Fund at 252-453-8002. Stay safe out there! Thank you!🥰 , ,

Summer is in full swing and we are bracing ourselves for one of the busiest weeks of the season. Do you know what to do if you suspect a wild horse is in immediate danger or seriously hurt?

If you come across a horse you believe is in distress or witness illegal activity (feeding or touching/getting too close), please immediately call the Currituck County communications center at 252-453-3633. Law enforcement can be dispatched and they will contact our staff who is on call 24/7. We may then reach out to you for more details - photographs and videos are often crucial, so please keep that in mind and document what you’re seeing if possible.

Posting about injuries or other issues on Facebook without first calling dispatch wastes valuable response time, makes communication difficult for us, and could put horses and people in danger. Please save the number in your phone if you are going to be on the 4x4 and let that call be your first step if you believe a horse needs help.

Thank you for helping us keep the horses safe!

Welcome to the world Ezra!! 🐴😎

Welcome to the world Ezra!! 🐴😎

Join us in welcoming the newest member of the herd, a c**t named Ezra. He was born about a week ago to a very experienced mother and both are in excellent condition. All of this mare's other foals have been black with no markings so we were excited to see that this little guy was not only chestnut, but also has a star on his forehead. Color and markings make absolutely no difference to the horses, but they sure make it easier for us to identify them when they're older. 😉

If you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the family, please remember to stay at least 50ft away from them at all times regardless of whether you're on foot or in a vehicle. Crowding them can cause unnecessary stress and can also habituate the foal during this very critical stage of his development. Causing a traffic jam around the horses is dangerous for them, other drivers, and pedestrians - please be sensible, respectful, and law-abiding if you are driving on the beach this spring and summer.

Ezra is the third foal born in 2024. The first was Eros, a c**t born in February, and there is one other foal that we estimate to be about a month old. We have not yet been able to determine if it's a c**t or a filly. That group lives primarily in the marsh and we do not see them often, but they did bring the foal out to the beach very briefly one afternoon a couple weeks ago. Mom and foal both look healthy, which is the most important thing!

If you'd like more information about how to be a good steward for the horses and their habitat, check out our Community Wild Horse Toolkit for lots of educational resources: https://www.corollawildhorses.com/community-wild-horse-toolkit/

Your support is what allows us to fulfill our mission to protect and preserve this critically endangered herd. Please consider becoming a member or making a donation today: https://www.corollawildhorses.com/support-corolla-wild-horse-fund/
