Mesa Verde Colorado - Remnants of a Lost Civilization

Between 100 to 1300 A.D, these Native Americans inhabited the area in the southwest corner of present day Colorado. Visiting Mesa Verde, you immediately see the cliff dwellings where the Anasazi lived. But they weren't always cliff dwellers. They started out in the valley living in pit houses. These were small in construction, with a central pit dug many feet into the ground to hold the heating and cooking fire.

A stone bench was built around the floor area. A small room at the south end was used for storage. Each pit house had a small hole in the ground which was dug as a symbolic entrance from the lower spirit world. It was known that they were farmers, growing corn and vegetables. They hunted animals for meat and clothing. They knew how to bring water to their crops by building ditches and dams. Eventually, stone lined lakes were built to hold the runoff from spring snow melts.

Pottery, cooking utensils and hunting and farming implements have been found at Mesa Verde. The pots were made of clay and used as storage for grain, water and also for cooking. Hunting and cooking implements were made of dried tree limbs, with dried animal ligaments tying the rocks and stones to the wood. It is believed that the Anasazi were the first Native Americans in Colorado to use the bow and arrow.

The people at Mesa Verde traded with travelers passing through their land. Evidence of this is the shell ornaments found around their homes. These came from the Gulf of California. Around 1200 A.D., the Anasazi were becoming richer and built larger houses. The pit houses were then used for ceremonial events. They were called "kivas". Sometime after 1200 A.D., the Anasazi moved into the cliff dwellings of the canyon. Raids from newcomers to the area made the move upward a strategic lookout point to see the enemy coming from all directions. 1300 A.D. shows that the Anasazi left the region. Archeologists only found a few human skeletons at the site, and concluded that they were from sick or older individuals.

War had not been waged on the cliff dwellers so that was not an option of speculation. Perhaps they had become too overcrowded for their valley and decided to move south and settle near the Rio Grande. Maybe frequent traders brought in diseases that wiped out the tribe. Nothing has been proven. Way out there in speculation is that aliens took them all back to their home planet on their spaceship.

Mesa Verde is a tribute to this lost tribe. A visit here will have you asking the same question that people have asked for centuries: What really became of them?

My husband and I have lived in Colorado for quite awhile. We have a beautiful property in the mountains with views that are just breathtaking. Being a detective of sorts, my curiosity was peaked by all the old west history Colorado has to offer. So I started to investigate. I found a wealth of information, lost civilizations, legends, ghost stories, unknown explorers, settlers, ghost towns, etc. We have traveled to many historic places in the state and have seen some of the triumphs and tragedies that helped form Colorado.

Sacramento is a great city for couples to visit, especially those who are more interested in the history of the area, but there are activities for those who may not be into going to museums and historical places.

Old Sacramento is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The area looks like a section of the city stuck in the 1800's, and although there are a few modern businesses in the area, Old Sacramento is more of a hotspot among tourists rather than a residential or commercial area. There are several museums and quaint shops in the area, as well as a few restaurants. The most visited part of Old Sacramento is the California State Railroad Museum, full of artifacts and trains, many of which are intact from the time they were last used. (Travel to California became much easier and quicker with the introduction of the Steam Engine.)

The city of Sacramento is also home to many festivals that many people come from all over the world to attend. The Traditional Jazz Music Festival is held annually over the Memorial Day Weekend and the California State Fair is one of the most popular events of its kind in the world. Held annually for the last 152 years, the California State Fair draws in more than a million visitors each year and is always filled with fun exhibits and entertaining performances.

As far as dining is concerned, Morton's Steakhouse is a wonderful upscale restaurant to spend the night at, as is the Biba Ristorante Italiano, which has won the "Best Restaurant in Sacramento" award multiple times. If you are in the mood for Chinese, P.F. Chang's China Bistro is always a favorite spot among couples.

Sacramento is a city that is buzzing with excitement and there is plenty to do and see in the wonderful city.

As a life-long resident, I have experienced most of the "must-do" kids activities in San Antonio. Now that I am raising children of my own, I am blessed to be able to share some of these same family fun experiences with them. Here are my picks for the top five must-do activities for kids.

Seaworld

SeaWorld of San Antonio is a marine life-based amusement park and aquarium. From dolphins to beluga and killer whales to penguins and sea lions, children get a chance to view these creatures, as well as interact with some of them. Being both an amusement park and aquarium, Seaworld offers a wonderful lineup of entertaining shows and thrill rides, along with a waterpark and a very special place called "Shamu's Happy Harbor", where kids can enjoy a water play area of their own. Saying No: Always keep in mind one thing; if you smell something fishy say 'No'. As most of the times, your Gut feelings have an idea what is coming in front. For example, if someone is trying to be friend with you and you don't feel good about it, just say 'No' in a polite manner.

Don't Travel During Nights: Yes this is another point which you always keep in mind if you are traveling solo. If you traveling from point A to point B, it is always suggested to cover the distance during morning.
Knowledge Of Scams: Before visiting any country whether it's Britain, India, Malaysia, Russia or any other country you must do your homework on various scams that other travelers face. Doing your homework is a must for anyone. So try doing your research. It will surely help you in understanding what to do and not do when facing the same issue.

Appropriate Dressing: In some cultures, people prefer modest dressing when visiting churches, mosques, temples and other religious places. In addition, if you have tattoos, try covering it, as not everyone likes it. So always try covering your body and not show your skin in some countries.

Cab safety: Always try to keep your belongings with you in the back seat so that if you need to jump out of the cab, you can do it without any second thought. Next always keep the number of the cab with you, so that in any mishaps you can share the number with police or your near ones.

The Austin live music scene (and by Austin we mean Austin, Texas) is one that is generally held up as a beacon for other musician-heavy cities trying to build industries around people gigging and those going out to gigs. After, Austin has been noted as being "the live music capital of the world", and there's a good reason for that. The city has been an embodiment of the utopian spirit that musicians have flocked to for decades. Couple that with a population that is always listening for the next big star, and you have the makings of a combustible music scene that is ready to go off almost any night.

Still, sifting through the number of solo acts and bands that move through the corridors of Texas' capital city can be a little overwhelming even for the grizzled music "lifer" who feels they have a grasp on what types of music are in Austin.

For starters, you have to take into consideration the geographic location of Austin. Nestled along a string of major interstates that lead into the city (i.e., I-35, I-45, I-10), it's no surprise that there'd be a veritable mix of music. Probably the most popular genre of music in Austin is rock music. The image of the young, hip guitar-toting kid walking the streets looking to make some serious noise is about as rock and roll as it gets, and Austin has it in spades (you can even look up "music census reports" for the city that tell you as much).

Even with the rock edge in play, Austin also fares well with the presence of folk music and "Americana" that uses a more traditional (old-school?) sound and acoustic instruments. This isn't surprising given the ability to carry an acoustic instrument around, and by virtue of the instrument's construction, you are able to play without the aid of amplification or electricity. The genre also offers a generally more intimate experience between the musician and the audience, allowing the song's message to ring a little deeper.

However, one caveat to the folk genre is that it tends to have a number of music styles get lumped into that could be served as their own genre, such as the label of Mexican music. Texas is a state that is steeped in history with its neighbor to the south, and as with the advent of Tex-Mex cuisine, Mexican music is fervent in the area though to a much lesser degree than other genres.

There is also some relegation of music styles such as R&B, jazz, blues, and hip-hop to cellar dwellers in terms of their popularity in Austin. This could be, in part, due to demographic shifts in city population, as well as general shifts in population movement in and out of the metropolitan Austin area.

Austin, Texas and the Austin live music scene, regardless of its genre breakdown, is an institution in the world of music. Musicians flock to the area to get a taste of audiences that actually want to hear live music, and they cut their teeth working the popular gig thoroughfares hoping to make it big. If you've been thinking about visiting the "heart o' Texas", now is about a good a time as any.

I been living in the Corpus Christi area for a long time and I know how popular Corpus Christi is and how great the beaches down there can be.

Corpus Christi/Padre Island National Seashore: This beach is located just off of Padre Island in South Texas. This beach is huge and long over 70 miles long and is a great place for skimboarders and surfers. It's not very developed and has an enormous amount of nature. This beach is also a great place to go camping. This park also has some great dunes and sand. This place is also famous for windsurfing and so many other things.

If I was you I be heading now to Corpus Christi, there's still time to catch a few waves and nature's beauty!

Longhorn Cavern

The cave at Longhorn Cavern State Park stays a cool 68 degrees year-round.

Do you need some time outdoors, but the weather isn't cooperating? Escape the rain, cold or sky-high temperatures by touring these underground treasures:

Longhorn Cavern is so unique it's a National Natural Landmark. It was formed when an large, ancient river ran underground, dissolving and cutting away at the rock as it went. Guided tours occur daily, and you don't need a reservation.

Kickapoo Cavern
It is still wild, so plan for a hike. A cave must have stalactites and stalagmites to be considered a cavern, and Kickapoo has one 8 stories tall, the largest in Texas. Tours are on Sat. with reservations. If you visit March to Oct., don't miss the breathtaking exodus of bats from the park's Stuart Cave.

Colorado Bend
This cave tours are for adventurers, because you will literally get down and dirty as you crawl through tunnels to reach the chambers. See what it's like (video). There are tours for 3 skill levels, so give it a try! Afterward, hike to the park's 70-foot-high Gorman Falls.

Franklin Mountains
This caves allows you to explore man-made "caves" on mine hikes. Guided tours take you into retired copper mines, where you'll see several types of minerals. Tours are occasional, and reservations are required.

I believe everyone dreams of traveling the world, it's simply not feasible for most of us. Most of us are busy with our life. That doesn't mean that you can't experience as much of it as possible while you're still on this planet. My daughter and I been discussing the possibility of her family and I taking one mini vacation per month. One way to see as much of it as possible is to look around where you live. You don't have to go to Paris or China. Around Texas where i live there are over 50 national parks I can reach within hours. My grandkids would immensely enjoy the parks and learn about nature. So plan once a month and bring your family and friends closer!

As you know I visited the Redwood National Park. Thought I give you some additional info besides the pictures and videos I posted.

The park was created in 1968 to protect land adjacent to the California state redwood parks that were formed in the 1920s. Currently the combined state and federal lands are administered under a joint agreement between the National Park Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The combined parks cover over 110,000 acres including 37 miles of pristine California coastline.

It's a beautiful park and the best way to see it by traveling up the coast. Sure you can fly in or take the train but you still have to rent a vehicle to get to the Redwood Park. Do yourself a favor and drive up. By the way, watch out for Bigfoot! Let me know if you see this post on your feed. Going back to my fan page to keep Posting my travel. Tks.

There is a website called www.Coolworks.com that u can visit n website will show you what kinds of jobs the park is hiring for the season. Park will put u up n feed u three square per day n pay you. On ur days off you get to see Yellowstone n surrounding area. Isn't that great!

I really don't like the idea of traveling alone. I had thought of take man's best friend along but decided against it for different reasons. Then I remembered Beto. He wasnt doing any thing. All he does is hang around the balcony n stare at the girls at the pool. We had a talk about the trip but he wasn't saying much. You see Beto is a good listener. He'll listen to me n will not say anything. Then once in awhile, I'll hear something from the balcony. He mumbled alot. I believe I heard 'Yes'. So we're going. It's going to be awesome trip!

One of the first place I'm visiting is a place called Crystal Beach. It's a good place to start camping n trying out my gear before heading out. Crystal Beach is an Unincorporated community in the Bolivar Peninsula census-designated place, in Galveston County, Texas, United States. Several ancient arrowheads and hand axes have been found along the shores of Texas’ barrier islands, relics of the Comanche and Karankawa Indian tribes who lived there 5,000 years ago. Adding to that ancient treasure is a cache of 16th-century coins, bottles, and a pistol that washed ashore from the wreck of a Spanish galleon along the Texas coast. What if I find some gold!
