A great trading post in Cortez, CO. 80% of their business comes from Native Americans.

Trading posts have been a fixture in the Four Corners region for a hundred years. During their heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, trading posts served as both centers of commerce and community gathering spots. As the name suggests, most goods were traded, not sold. Historically, Navajo families brought in their livestock, wool, rugs, baskets, carvings, buckskins and jewelry and traded them for goods they needed at home such as clothes, tools, and food. Patrons who traveled far by wagon or horseback would visit with one another, oftentimes huddling around the wood stove, a key fixture of the trading post.

Remnants of the Ismay Trading Post can be found out County Road G west of Cortez. Built in 1921 by John and Eleanor Heffernen Ismay. Once a thriving gathering spot where Utes, Mormon pilgrims, local ranchers could be found all grabbing their mail and/or stocking up on seasonal fresh produce, canned goods or hardware supplies.

While today’s trading posts in Mesa Verde Country no longer work on the trade system and typically only carry Native arts and crafts, they remain an important tie to commerce in the region and the bridging of Navajo and Anglo cultures.

See the trading posts for yourselves during your next trip through Mesa Verde Country!

Should these people walk through or around those wet and dry desert potholes? Let's find out...

One of the least known yet most incredible creatures we share the desert southwest with are shrimp. Yes, shrimp. These little invertebrates aren't the jumbo pink kind you see in the grocery store. They're more like the sea monkeys you might have had as a kid. Well actually, they're exactly like those little 'sea monkeys' which are also actually shrimp.

There are several species found in our region including tadpole shrimp and fairy shrimp. Our little crustaceous cousins have adapted to the wildly variable conditions that exist on the Colorado Plateau. In fact, they've adapted to live in just about any condition, as these organisms are amongst the oldest known species to exist, making dinosaurs look recent!

These mighty little creatures live in the ephemeral (temporary) pothole pools of water and go dormant when they dry up, become too hot, or become too cold. Going dormant is more like an amazing magic trick. When these clever crustaceans sense the weather is changing they convert the water in their bodies into sugars, which can't evaporate, freeze, or expand and contract with temperature thus keeping them alive to swim another day. These very small animals can be dormant for years waiting for the right conditions to emerge.

Thus it is SO important to make sure you don't walk through potholes (wet or dry) on slickrock because you might unknowingly be stepping on shrimp!

(Thanks to SJMA's Education Director, Adriana Stimax, for this fascinating lesson)
