Traveling along Wisconsin’s Great River Road! Lots of spooky spots to stop and investigate! Highway 35 along the Mississippi River. So scenic and beautiful!
Visiting the von Stiehl Winery in Algoma, Wisconsin can be an adventure steeped with history and hauntings. While there, besides the amazing wine tasting, I was treated to a tour, and a most interesting conversation with three of their staff. Built in 1868, it had many purposes after Dr. Charles Steihl asked the state of Wisconsin to create a winery license so he could legally sell his Door County Cherry Wine. Stories shared by my three servers include a small boy who hides in the wine cellar, and who they ask if he’s doing okay. One server witnessed a woman dressed in 1800 attire go into the women’s restroom, and never return out the same door. When she went in to check on her, there was no one to be found in the restroom. Another ghostly occurrence was experienced by Mary, when she was cleaning up after an event in the wine cellar area. She heard a raspy woman’s voice so close to her that she hurried up the stairs and was considerably shaken. From wine glasses flying off shelves, to a ceiling fan mysteriously falling, this winery is full of many “spirits”. Mary was kind enough to give me a tour of the wine cellar and reception area where I videotaped this amazing orb traveling from the back of the cellar area toward us. I totally enjoyed this quaint town, and hope you stop in to enjoy the wine and ethereal residents at the Von Steihl Winery!
