Wednesday, February 5, VDOT Culpeper District weather update:

VDOT is preparing for a winter storm that is forecast to bring sleet and freezing rain to much of western and northwestern Virginia. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the Piedmont region, where precipitation is predicted to begin Wednesday evening and continue through the morning Thursday. Freezing rain is forecast to cause icy roads during the Thursday morning commuting hours.

Do not travel during this storm. Anyone on the road before the storm arrives on Wednesday should monitor local weather forecasts and road conditions and drive with extreme caution as conditions will deteriorate quickly as air temperatures fall below freezing. Pavement temperatures are also expected to drop, with significant ice accumulations up to one-quarter inch forecast through Thursday morning. Icy conditions will occur first on bridges, overpasses, ramps and in shaded areas.

VDOT is mobilizing resources to prepare for the storm. In the nine counties of the Culpeper District crews will be on duty overnight on Wednesday and will begin spreading salt and sand to improve traction and melt ice after precipitation begins. Since the storm is forecast to begin as rain brine will not be used for this event since the rain will wash it off the road, rendering it ineffective.

Safety and Travel Resources
When winter weather arrives, residents and motorists should plan travel ahead of time, check road conditions, prepare an emergency car kit, follow forecasts and announcements and limit travel based on conditions.

Prior to travel, motorists should visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov, call 511 or check the 511 Virginia mobile app for up-to-date information on road and traffic conditions. Remember to check conditions along your entire travel route as conditions may change in other regions of the state.

Ice is never to be assumed safe enough to walk or ice skate on in our region. With the recent deep freeze some people have been seen in the area walking and skating on area lakes and ponds. With the above freezing temperatures approaching please do not attempt to go out on any ice covered water.

On January 21st, Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue was dispatched for the auto accident with injuries at Route 29 and White Shop.

Crews in quarters immediately responded with a crew of 3 in Rescue Engine 16.

Rescue Engine 16 arrived on scene and found a two vehicle accident with one driver trapped. This automatically upgraded the call type to an auto accident with entrapment bringing extra resources.

The driver was quickly extricated by Rescue Engine 16. Two patients were transported by Culpeper County Emergency Services

Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department assisted with an additional Engine and Chief Officer.

Mr. Thomas has been located, unfortunately deceased. Please pray for the family as they deal with this difficult time.

Thank you to the approximately 75 volunteers and first responders on this incident.

All search teams are moving to Reva Fire house. You will see walking teams in different areas as well as dog and drone teams.
… We have received numerous calls about citizen’s searching as well. That has put a little bit of an issue for scent discrimination by the dog teams. All though we certainly appreciate the help.

Virginia search and rescue teams are arriving now to help in the grid search of the area .

Ten search and rescue teams are assigned to approximately 400 acres. They are deploying now. Multiple different uniforms and identifiers on their clothing. Deputies and Virginia Conservation Police are assigned each group.

⭐️URGENT⭐️

Large Sheriffs office, fire/rescue response in the area of Frazier Road and Blackbird loop. Helicopters and drone teams have also joined the search.

Responders are looking for a missing 83 year old white male, wearing jeans and long sleeve t-shirt. He was last seen around 330 am. The male suffers from dementia.

It is with great sadness we announce the death of charter and lifetime member Frank Short. Frank was a pillar of our department for many years and was active in administrative duties until his passing. Frank will be greatly missed.

On January 4th, Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a garage fire.

Wagon 16 and Tanker 16 had just cleared a previous incident as this got dispatched.

Units quickly arrived on scene and found a generator on fire that extended into a detached garage. Crews quickly placed a hand line in service stopping the fire from extending to the rest of the garage.

Great work by all crews involved.

On December 24, Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue was dispatched for the auto accident with entrapment.

At the same time of this dispatch, the county had a significant call volume due to icy conditions causing multiple accidents and spreading resources thin. Response 16 handled additional wrecks on Route 29.

Rescue Engine 16 arrived on scene and found one vehicle on its roof with one confirmed trapped. Car 16 and Chief 16 arrived on scene shortly after to assist with stabilization and patient extrication. Crews quickly extricated the patient with the assistance from Medic 12-4

On December 22nd, Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue was dispatched for the structure fire in the area of Norman Rd.

Wagon 16 arrived on scene and found fire from the garage. Wagon 16 along with Car 2 quickly placed a hand line in service stopping the fire from spreading.

Great work from all crews involved in stopping the fire from spreading into the home.
