Today in History, the 'Kitty Hawk' made its first flight on December 17, 1903.

The Wright brothers' flight lasted 12 seconds, covered 120 feet, and reached a top speed of 6.8 miles per hour. They made three more flights that day, the longest covering 852 feet in 59 seconds.

This event laid the foundation for all future aviation developments.
