In the 21st Century, people are not always buried in the family plot next to the church. We are much more mobile and there are many options. But, when one dies suddenly, the surviving family members may not have a clue - adding even more stress to a stressful situation. Have that conversation.

Everyone behaves differently as end of life approaches. Quite often the dying person passes through denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance at a different pace than the survivors. When a person reaches acceptance, they are wanting to die in peace. If family members are still in denial, telling mom or dad to "hang in there, you're going to beat this" - it destroys the peace of mind of acceptance.

I get upset with financial institutions suggesting that a joint account is a good probate avoidance strategy. A parent may add a son or daughter to an account for "convenience" creating a disaster upon the parent's death. Please let your attorney do your estate plan - not a financial institution.

A guardianship of a parent has two parts - guardianship of their person and guardianship of their estate, and can be a source of sibling rivalry and greed. Telling a parent they are incompetent and taking over their affairs can be difficult. Planning ahead can keep matters private and reduce stress.
