Colorado in September ❣️🌎☀️
Honestly Colorado is beautiful all year around, but we especially love September! This year we enjoyed it with a little minimoon to Breckenridge after our wedding in Steamboat! See below for our tips!
🏠Stay: Grand Timber Lodge (pricier than we usually do but we were celebrating!). We had a gorgeous suite with our own balcony and access to the restaurant and pools
🚶♀️Do: Walk around downtown, do some shopping, eat great food, and sit by the river. The gondola is closed for a month but we'll add that to our list for next time!
🍴Eat: Rita's Agave & Tacos (low key, awesome staff, delicious food, and stiff drinks!), Kenosha Breck (awesome patio, great staff, and another table even paid for our dinner when they heard we were newly weds!). There's plenty of nicer spots too but we enjoy a more low key environment

📍 Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, Colorado
.
This wilderness area is about 4 hours south of Denver, but is well worth the drive! We took the Rainbow Trail to Macy Trail and camped at the lower lake. This shot was taken during a day hike up to the upper lake. Views for days and much less crowded than wilderness areas closer to Denver!

Obviously mountains in the winter are great, but there's something so magical about them in the summertime! Sangre de Cristos Wilderness is absolutely stunning, the drive in had us in awe before we even hit the trial!
.
Planning your trip? Here's what you need to know:
✅ 3 hours south of Denver on I-25
✅ Macy Trail head has limited parking so get there early
✅ You can camp at the trailhead if you come in at night to get an early start on the day (there is a bathroom here but no other amenities)
✅ It's about 6 miles and ~2500 feet of elevation gain to Macy Lake. Then another mile and ~1000 feet of elevation gain to Upper Macy Lake
✅ You can set up camp along the trial and then do day hikes to the lakes if you don't want to carry your pack all that way, but if you're willing to make it to the lakes you'll likely see less people/more wildlife

How to budget travel ❣️🌎☀️

We quit our jobs in 2019 and traveled the world full time for most of the year. Now we are back to the 9-5 life but still make time to travel the world on a budget. Here are the tips we've learned!
.
✅ Hostels not hotels! For couple/groups especially, you can usually save money or pay the same for a private room vs. paying for multiple dorm beds. We love the comfort of private rooms and bathrooms and is similar to a hotel
✅ Use public transportation! Local buses are cheap and often efficient! When we were at Iguazu Falls, an Uber would have been more than $60 but the bus was only $10 total for us both. We also find that public transpo is often much more efficient outside of the US.
✅ Cook at home. Many hostels have public kitchens for guests to use. We spend more on meals and drinks than anything else when we travel in terms of daily budget, so even making one meal at home can save you tons! If you can, find hostels that include breakfast in the cost too!

Let's talk safety while traveling internationally ❣️🌎☀️

A lot of people asked if we felt safe in Rio, and honestly most places we travel. And the answer is yes! Of course we take some steps to stay extra safe (laid out below), but we also feel there is so much value in pushing beyond your comfort zone and experience being in the minority when traveling internationally.
.
We followed these steps in Rio but they are relevant in most cities/areas you might visit:
✅ use a money belt for cash, passports, etc. We like the ones that are basically flat fanny packs and go under your shirt. This is great in the airport because your things are easily accessible, but also in crowds to prevent pick pocketing
✅ wear any backpacks on your front when in crowds/on public transport so you can keep an eye on your belongings. We also kept a foot through the strap of our bag on the beach so someone couldn't grab it while we sat there (we did have friends whos bag got stolen with both their phones on Copacabana beach, so make sure someone is always with your stuff on the beach!)
✅ wear clothes with zip pockets so it's harder to be pick pocketed (and be mindful if someone bumps into you while walking)
✅ depending on where you are, going out alone at night may seem sketchy. We explored Copacabana and Lapa at night and always felt safe, but also knew our way back to the hostel and stayed in well traveled areas. This is good practice wherever you are because you never know!

Rio is an amazing city with so much to offer! We stayed in Copacabana (the ultimate beach paradise) and Lapa (filled with history, culture, and samba). The coast line is gorgeous and there are so many insanely beautiful views wherever you go. Plus while Portuguese is extremely tough for us, the people are gracious and we were mostly able to get by by memorizing a few key phrases (no falo Portugues being the most important lol).

We're going to take you through our whole trip, but here is the basic itinerary for anyone else planning a getaway to the amazing Brazil!
🔺Day 1-4 Copacabana (make sure you do beach days and check out the cable cars and Christ the redeemer)

🔺Day 7-12 Ilhe Grande (this is a few hours from Rio, more to come on this island paradise!)
🔺Day 13-14 Lapa (sit outside at the outdoor bars then hit a samba club to see live music and dance)

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro ❣️🌎☀️

📍Selina Copacabana Hostel
.
We had a great time at this hostel. We opted for a private room and paid a little extra for this gorgeous view, but it was so worth it!! This room had a queen sized bed, private bathroom, and large TV (pro tip: bring an HDMI cord and laptop to watch what you want without worrying about different channels/languages)
.
The staff were friendly and many spoke English, which was so helpful because Portuguese is very difficult for us. They also have two onsite restaurants so you can easily get meals between activities.
.
Our favorite part was that they were right across the street from the beach and close to restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and a nightly pop-up market. It was convenient, safe, and so much fun!

We started at a backpackers campground near the trailhead the night before. Make sure you make reservations early to secure a spot, it was packed when we were here! We got to the trailhead before sunrise so didn't have any issues with parking or crowds.

We found the perfect campsite ~8 miles in up on the granite surrounding one of the lakes. The views, solitude, and sunsets were incredible!! There is serious elevation gain on this trail so be prepared!

3 Hiking tips you didn't know you needed ❣️🌎☀️

1. Skin protection is vital - this means sunscreen, hats, and long sleeves (bonus this helps protect you from ticks)
2. Water filters are super helpful for longer treks. We recommend a gravity water filter, which is basically a big bag you fill that has a tube at the bottom that drops the filtered water into your bottle (~$50 from REI). Other options include boiling and iodine.
3. Enjoy the sounds of nature - don't be that person on the trail playing music from a speaker. Plus this could scare off wildlife before you get a chance to admire them.

You need a day pass ($10) or annual pass ($100) to park so plan ahead - we actually saw someone get a ticket while we were there! This is a popular trail in the summer but we had plenty of space to ourselves in December and no issue with snow. This area is also known for us mountain lion activity so keep your wits about you!
