The irresistible joy of sailing.

For all its challenges there is something quite easy about being on a ship - enjoying it. In fact, sometimes that’s all there is to do.

Being surrounded by water and sky makes one feel very small, which can often be quite a relief, as life’s problems also seem to shrink in the massive expanses of nature.

🌬️We hope this journey brings a little bit of that to all of you, and we hope to see you onboard one day!

There is no Uber eats on the water & Dinner doesn’t just appear out of thin air, so the ship’s cook, known as a steward, is perhaps the most important role onboard.

Bad food is thrown number one cause of poor moral. But if the food is good then it’s hard to complain. Especially since it’s the steward who has to stay below deck and deal with the unexpected lurches of the sea while trying to balance pots, pans and fire.

This is why we are very lucky to have Luke aboard. It is his first time cooking on a tall ship, but you wouldn’t know it from the food. It tastes like he’s been doing this his whole life.

There are so many lessons to be learned from trying new things. We’ll catch up with Luke later and see if he has anything to share! But in the meantime, remember that no matter what you are doing - eat well and stay hydrated. It’s important on these longer voyages.

There is something beautiful about doing things in the old way. By hand. Out in the elements. Plus it sticks in your memory a little better when it’s so beautiful.

What a wonderful feeling: Being out on the open water, sails full of wind, at the beginning of a voyage.

Today marks the beginning of a much larger journey: your chance to become part of The Planet School !

We have just launched our first crowdfunding campaign and are offering some great rewards for early supporters, including three different kits that pack the spirit of our adventure into a one box.

Daring is a key ingredient for any change to happen. We know that changing the way we educate is necessary, so to prove it's possible we are sailing from Detroit to the Caribbean for our first semester at sea.

To be part of this endeavor, in any way, can lead to many more adventures: Be it voyages aboard Wonder, or building our next two campuses.

We wager that the future can be truly great, and we are here for the next generations who are going to make it happen.

The skeleton crew:
Luke, Sophie and Graham.

These three were the first mates chosen for our journey and each bear a special responsibility - leading watches, feeding everyone on board and ultimately being a bridge between the captain and the rest of the crew.

It is not an easy job but these three wouldn’t have signed up for it if it was. They are seasoned adventurists, be it climbing, river raft guiding or teaching languages in foreign lands.

But the real reason they fit the gig is their spirit: A generous pour of curiosity, kindness and courage.

Attributes that suit both students and teachers at The Planet School.

Looking forward to kick off this new chapter of our journey!

Thoughts with Thane Richard, Captain of Wonder. (That is actually his legal job title)

“It all starts with an idea. And the idea that spawned this great adventure was to completely transform the way we educate teens. To not just train them to do well on a standardized test, but to create a rigorous experiential learning curriculum that builds grit and makes a difference. By the time you’re a teen, the real world should become your classroom in preparation for it very soon becoming your reality.

To begin this voyage, we bought an 82’ schooner in the Florida keys and sailed it up to Detroit educating a group of eager adventurers along the way. Now we are doing it again: sailing back down to Florida, not to return the ship from whence it came, but to set in motion a much larger voyage - the launch of the Planet School.” - Thane Richard

One of several Guard Gates we have passed through on the Erie Canal. These are mostly for emergencies to allow a section of the canal to be isolated or maintenance if a section of the canal needs to be drained. We pretend they are medieval vine-covered checkpoints.
