Southern Trinity Area Rescue

Southern Trinity Area Rescue Southern Trinity Area Rescue consists of a group of volunteers dedicated to providing Emergency Medical Services to the community.

For 41 years STAR has been the 911 Emergency Medical Service (EMS) for Southern Trinity and Eastern Humboldt counties. Our service area covers Highway 36 from Dinsmore to South Fork ridge, and includes the towns of Ruth, Zenia, Kettenpom, and Mad River, as well as Ruth Lake and the Yolla Bolly wilderness. A non-profit ambulance company staffed by volunteers, we respond 24/7 year-round to make this

remote area a little less remote when an emergency happens and help is needed quickly. Whether you live in this area or come here for the weekend or vacation, when you need help we will be there for you. This page is to inform the public about STAR, other EMS services, weather, health and safety concerns in our area.

🇺🇸🎆🇺🇸
On this Hot holiday (and the days ahead) remember:

WATCH FOR SIGNS OF HEAT ILLNESS 🥵

In the summer, multiple days and nights of hot weather can be very dangerous. Getting too hot can make people sick. California Department of Health recommends learning the signs and how to help someone with heat illness:

• HEAT STROKE: red, hot, dry skin; very high body temperature; dizziness; nausea; confusion, strange behavior, or unconsciousness; rapid pulse or throbbing headache. Call 911.

• HEAT EXHAUSTION: heavy sweating, cramps, headache, nausea or vomiting, tiredness, weakness, dizziness and fainting. Move to a cool place and get medical help if vomiting or symptoms get worse or last longer than 1 hour.

KEEP COOL 🌡️

When temperatures are very high, make sure to:

• Wear lightweight, light colored clothing and a hat outdoors.

• Wear sunscreen and avoid too much sun.

• Slow down and avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day.

Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. If your home doesn’t have air conditioning or if there was a power outage, find a public place you can go to get out of the heat:

• Libraries, shopping malls, and community centers can be cool places to go.

• Ask neighbors, friends or family if they have a cool place you can hang out.

• Call your local county to find a location near you to keep cool.

If you work outside:

• Take breaks to cool down.

• Your employer must give you water, rest, and shade.

LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS 👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏽🧑🏼‍🦽👶🏼🐈‍⬛🦮

Certain populations are more susceptible to extreme heat:

• ELDERLY: For people who are 65 or older, heat can be especially dangerous. Make a plan with a friend, relative, or neighbor who will call or come check on you twice a day while it is hot outside.

• PETS: Bring pets inside. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water.

Make sure everyone is out of the car whenever you park. Never leave a child, adult, or animal alone inside a parked vehicle. Temperatures inside a car can rise almost 20 degrees within the first 10 minutes causing heat stroke or death.

🇺🇸4th of July 🎆 is right around the corner… buy fireworks if you must - but consider doing what we do - saving them for New Year’s Eve!

If you are compelled to enjoy them now have buckets of water, a fire extinguisher🧯, a large clear area and be more than careful.
Remember to check if they are even allowed on that day if the fire danger is high then.🔥
Be careful around them and make sure your children are safe - injuries can and do happen… 🚒🚑

AND remember that pets (yours and your neighbors) are often terrified of them.💥 Make sure they are protected and where they won’t be able to run off.
BE SAFE!

Fireworks are illegal in certain areas of California, because each year serious injuries and millions of dollars in property damage occur from wildfires sparked by fireworks. Large grass crops and dry vegetation increase the threat for devastating fires throughout all of California.

Remember fireworks spark fires: Check your local laws and ordinances to find out if fireworks are legal where you live, or if certain “Safe and Sane” fireworks are permitted.

In this hot spell it will be tempting, but….

Don't let rivers fool you. Warm temperatures may make a swim appealing but cold and swift water makes rivers unsafe. Stay safe by wearing a life jacket for all river activities and avoid entering fast moving water, even if it seems shallow.

Warming temperatures can make a swim the river appealing, but remember, cold and swift waters make rivers dangerous. Don't let rivers fool you. Water flows much faster and deeper only a short distance from shore. You can easily be swept into a dangerous situation whether you are swimming, tubing, or even just wading. The rivers are also constantly changing and producing new hazards like submerged trees. Make your visit to the river a safe one by wearing a life jacket for all river activities and avoid entering fast moving water.
