Once you get here, everything is close—the ocean is right in front of you, the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust’s trails are all close by and you have your choice of a lobster shacks, take out counters, cafes or fine dining within just five miles of SeaBirch. Drive 15 miles up the road and enjoy Brunswick’s excellent dining, art and shopping scene…it’s like a mini-Portland, Maine. The real Portland is less than 45 minutes away and Freeport’s Outlets, including the famous LL Bean outlet, is even closer. Maine’s biggest midcoast beach (3 miles of sand) is Popham Beach and it’s 45 minutes away, but there are sandy pocket beaches within walking distance and SeaBirch sits on it’s own ocean front lot with a rocky shorefront and clean, deep water for swimming, kayaking or paddle boarding

The Maine West coalition helped coordinate an effort to resupply food pantries in western Maine that have been hit with increased demand due to job loss and financial hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Volunteers delivered the food to six pantries that serve 400 families in Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Canton, Byron, Roxbury, Andover, and Weld.

“This was a community effort,” said Allie Burke, Executive Director of the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, a Maine West partner. “We had a volunteer step forward to manage the project, Sunday River pitched in both financially and with help from their staff, and the 4-H Learning Center at Bryant Pond managed all the logistics. It was really inspiring to see everyone jump in to make this happen quickly.”

Route 123 to Route 24 Loop in Harpswell, ME

With about 216 miles of total coastline, you’ll be hard-pressed to find prettier coastal New England drives than those in this quaint New England pocket. For this drive, follow Route 123 to the end at Harpswell Neck and then loop to 24 to see Orr’s Island, and Bailey Island. Along the way, expect stunning beach vistas, marinas, historic homes, and plenty of pit stops worth making for hiking trails. (Yes, there’s no shortage of lobster haunts, too.) Post up at the Sea Birch Cottage on the Harpswell Sound and be prepared to go home with sore back and bicep muscles from all the kayaking. While waiting for the cyclists to make their way down, I was checking out compositions on the Bailey Island Cribstone Bridge and this couple in a little red convertible came along at just the right time. What a perfect day for an early fall drive with the top down!

Lobster shack. Beach. Repeat. About 15 miles south of Brunswick, this 3-mile long island is brimming with fantastic views, whether you set out to Mackerel Cove, the Bronze Fisherman's Statue at the island's southern tip, or just watch one of the many fishing and lobstering boats drift out to sea. Wander art galleries in nearby Harpswell or get lost in natural wonder with a Casco Bay Lines cruise. Enjoy your stay at the island's endearing Driftwood Inn, a staple here for over 100 years, and where choosing between lobster, scallops, and haddock is no easy feat. Don't make plans for a day or two, okay? Instead, take long walks along the shoreline or enjoy the Giant's Stairs Trail and relish in total detox in the Pine Tree state.

Rugged shores, classic coastal towns, and lobster rolls washed down with hoppy local beer. This is Maine’s late-summer perfection—the microseason when the Pine Tree State shines. It’s when the water is warmest, and the wild blueberries are ripest for the picking.

This route delivers a hefty dose of vintage oceanside charm.
