Last week, I took the family out to California for a change of scenery in theme parks! It was a little hot (but not “core of the sun in Florida” hot) and we had an absolutely fantastic time!
Day 1️⃣:Knott's Berry Farm!
My knowledge of Knott’s Berry Farm was purely anecdotal: I’d meet people over the years who had lived in Southern California and raved about this theme park - and they weren’t wrong.
First: it’s incredibly clean and tidy and easy to navigate. Big Win!
Second: if you have smaller kids - Camp Snoopy was so stinking adorable! Fun (and funny) rides for kids. My own were a wee bit too tall for most - and they were bummed.
Third: Love coasters? VISIT KNOTT’S. Holy cow! I’ve gone to Cedar Point and Hershey and these coasters were incredible. Because I had neck surgery a year ago, I am limited on riding them but I made everyone else go and they had SUCH a great time! I heard a LOT of “THAT WAS SO COOL!”.
Fourth: You all know I love Disney and the theming and Knott’s had AMAZING theming! They have SIX themed areas but my favorite was “Ghost Town”. It wasn’t just a small section and it felt like an old Western Town from the 1800’s! The other themed areas are just as neat too.
Fifth: the food. Mrs. Knott was known for her fried chicken and it didn’t disappoint! That was our second meal of the day and I could’ve gone twice! Fun fact: it’s located outside the entrance gates so you can go there without a ticket too. And you can’t visit without some kind of delicious boysenberry baked good! I mean, that’s how the park started: a farm!
I value my time so we had “Fast Lane” and in most cases, it was pretty good but the merge points were kind of early on some attractions so it saved time but you weren’t at the front the of the queue. It maybe added 5 to 10 minutes waiting at each attraction.
Next time I’m helping you plan your vacation in Southern California - let’s talk about whether Knott’s Berry F
Let's jump right into:
Day 2️⃣: Disney's California Adventure Park!
We stayed at the delightful Disneyland Hotel and I'll do a quick write up after I post all of our daily activities. One thing I'll note here is that it's the furthest of the three Disneyland Resorts from the parks, but gives lovely views of fireworks (on an upper floor).
My friend was generous enough to fly down and join us for our fun adventures - it was a blast having her show the kids all the hidden magic of the parks (and helped me refresh my memory!).
After passing through a quick security check - we were off to Disney's California Adventure Park (DCA). Now: I love me some Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida but the theming of DCA is far and above what you see in Florida.
Because we were onsite guests - we were able to walk into the park 30 minutes before the masses arrived and we were able to hop on WEB Slingers: A Spider Man Adventure with no wait and when we completed that - we got to hop over to Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout!
For those of you who don't know: that was the old "Tower of Terror" attraction that was changed a few years back to this awesome new iteration and it didn't disappoint. Sure - you're in the same creaky "elevator" but the music and storyline was a blast. I loved it more than seeing that giant eyeball peering at me at Tower of Terror (IYKYK).
The fun didn't stop there: we were able to visit Cars Land (which is adorable, even though I'm not really a fan of the movie) and over to San Fransokyo Square finally venturing to Paradise Pier.
In between the fun: we chowed down at Pym Test Kitchen and these two Dads enjoyed a cool beer on Paradise Pier.
We headed back to the resort and hit the pool!
There was no way to see it all - we had such a blast finding neat little areas all over the park we didn't get a chance to visit each attraction! But we did go back on another day (and you'll see that post in a couple days).
Imagine waking up to this breakfast in St. Tropez 🥐 ☕. Connect with me for a balance of adventure and relaxation while enjoying France.
I will be in St Tropez late September and I plan to recreate this exact moment!

I think we all know that I visit Walt Disney World in Florida (and sometimes I take my family too 😂) quite a bit: it really helps me keep me up to date for my clients so they can go prepared and have amazing vacations.
Disneyland, on the other hand, I haven’t been able to visit nearly enough. Part of it is logistics - the flights are longer and they aren’t nearly as frequent (we are hard-core Southwest Airlines fliers thanks to the Companion Pass).
The closest airport to Disneyland is John Wayne/Orange County and there are no nonstops currently from Chicago Midway on Southwest.
HOWEVER, Southwest has grown exponentially at Long Beach Airport and I am a HUGE fan. It’s a small, compact airport and we had our checked bags in 5 minutes and in a rideshare in less than 20 minutes after we landed! All that AND a convenient nonstop (or two) from Chicago every day!
I’ll be posting this week all about Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure Park and pointing out the key differences and why these parks might make more sense for YOUR vacation!
I’ll tell you right now the weather is the winner in California. I have clients sweating it out in Florida and although the high here will be 90 today in Anaheim: it’s a “dry” heat so it’s warm but I don’t need a fan or “cooling cloth”!
First up today: Knott’s Berry Farm! This is a Southern California Classic and is so beloved - so watch for stories and posts about our adventures there!
John's Mexico HOT TIP:
Resorts that are not in Tulum but want you to believe they are:
Conrad Tulum
Hilton Tulum
Bahia Principe Tulum
Catalonia Royal Tulum
Dreams Tulum
Don’t be fooled by these names. These hotels are 20-30 minutes away from Tulum on the highway! It's kind of like the "Fat Free" fad from a decade (or two) ago!
Some of those are lovely resorts - but they aren't REALLY in Tulum!
