Established in 1906 by Ted Smallwood, this Trading Post served a remote and isolated area buying hides, furs, and farm produce in exchange for providing the goods required to survive.

Ted Smallwood’s Store was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, it remained open until 1982.

When the doors were shut, 90% of the original goods remained in the store.

In 1990, Ted’s granddaughter reopened the store as a museum and today it serves as a time capsule of Florida's pioneer history.

What is better than star gazing? Maybe, star gazing ON A BOAT?!

We have a new program at the Gulf Coast district: the Starlight Cruise! This two-hour program will take place roughly once a month, on Saturdays closest to the new moon. The next program is scheduled for Saturday, February 26.

With a Park Ranger as your guide, you will travel on a large catamaran through the Ten Thousand Islands and experience the dark side of the Everglades. Park Rangers will point out stars, planets and other interesting night sky objects, and relate stories of the night sky.

Reservations are required and spaces are filling fast! To make reservations, please visit our concessioner’s website, evergladesfloridaadventures.com or call 855-793-5542.

Starlight Cruises are scheduled for February 26 and March 26!

More ranger-led astronomy programs can also be found on our park’s event calendar, https://www.nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/calendar.htm.

Slow down to save wildlife!

Animals crossing the road or alongside the road may not always be apparent, like this little Snowy Egret making its way to the other side of the road. Many animals blend in with their habitats, and may not be obvious until they attempt to cross the road out in the open.

Respecting speed limits and watching for movement on the sides of the road both go a long way in keeping both wildlife and visitors safe.

Report any wildlife injuries or reckless driving to park dispatch at (305) 242-7740.
