It truly is amazing how each person you meet in life can have an impact. Three years ago I was Skype coaching a TEDxGrandForks speaker who was an OT student at USC. He passed my name along to a faculty member who was passionate about their students becoming top presenters in their field. And here I am today! Have you ever asked your audience a question and heard crickets? Chances are YOU set them up to listen instead of participate. If an audience listens for ten or twenty minutes, they drift into listening mode and participation becomes impossible. If you engage your audience within the first few minutes, you set the expectation that they must participate!

How to use humor effectively in speeches

A close friend of mine recently told me a joke she was thinking of using at the beginning of an upcoming speech. I explained to her that a speaker must build rapport with an audience before that audience will find you humorous, thus why you should never use a joke to start a presentation. Using humor in presentations is something that requires a great deal of thoughtfulness and strategy. Here is a fantastic article outlining advice on this subject.
