It’s and it’s a great time to be keeping your eyes to the sky with the most popular meteor shower of the year on display! The Perseid Meteor show is visible until August 24th with its peak being the weekend of August 11th-13th! Buffalo River Country’s dark skies make it an ideal location to catch the show!

Have you ever stopped to listen to all the sounds you can hear on the river? As you float down the river, take a moment and listen to all the critters and other wildlife that are living near the banks of the Buffalo. If you take the time to stop and listen, you might hear fish jumping up out of the water trying to eat an insect for lunch, you may see and hear otters swimming and splashing in the water, or the mighty croak of a bullfrog. If you are quiet, you may catch a glimpse of a doe with her babies crossing the river and hear them carefully make their way through the shallow water. You will also hear the laughter of families as they make their way down the river or have made camp along the banks of the Buffalo making memories for years to come. These are the things that make Buffalo National River special to so many people. The place where special memories can be made, and many different species of wildlife can be seen if you take a moment to stop and listen.

If you’re making your way down Buffalo National River, there’s something you otter know. Our waters have river otters!

River otters love to socialize with one another and work together. They can be found living in a few different types of groups. Female otters tend to stay with their pups, sometimes with the father as well. In other cases, a male and female otter may pair up or a litter of pups may stick together for some time after becoming adults. The largest groups tend to consist of males that form bachelor groups that spend much of their time together. These groups are not based on kinship, but instead form to engage in mutually beneficial behavior. They will often hunt together to catch fish and other small creatures found in and around the water.

Besides, hunting, otters engage in another important social behavior: p**ping! Groups of river otters often hang out together on riverbanks or next to other bodies of water gathered around social p**ping spots called latrines. At these latrines, the otters deposit f***s and other waste products and socialize with one another. This socialization may involve wrestling and other forms of play or could consist of grooming each other’s fur. While these are probably not the nicest-smelling parties, they form a key part of how river otters communicate with one another. Researchers may also find these latrines useful. They examine the p**p, also known as s**t, found at these latrines to determine otters’ diets and help them to better understand the ecology of that particular area.

Next time you are out on the Buffalo River, keep an eye out for these river residents. You may see a single pair of otters wandering the waters, but you may be lucky enough to see one of these larger bachelor groups frolicking alongside the river. Just remember to let them enjoy the water in peace just like you would for everyone else on the river.

Same spot, I truly Believe there’s no place like home. The Weather, shut-up!!!! Foggy, cool and well I couldn’t ask for better. The sun will be out later and it will get hot, but it will cool down overnight to make for another magic morning.
