Jamaica Statement

It has come to our attention that several clients or potential clients have concerns regarding the recent Jamaica travel advisory issued by the U.S. Department of State. Please know that all of our Sojourney Travel advisors closely monitor updates and advisories that impact our clients. When we feel there is a need to be concerned, we have an open and honest conversation with our clients regarding their upcoming travels.

After sitting on calls with Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and several resort representatives, we have been assured that many of the crimes reported in Jamaica are related to internal feuds or family differences. It is highly unlikely that a tourist would be involved in any of these crimes.

Over the years, Jamaica has built up a reputation for being a top tourist destination. In fact, 42% of Jamaica’s business comes from tourism. Last year, the number of Americans visiting Jamaica exceeded 2.2 million, and 80% of cruise passengers visiting Jamaica were American citizens. The large number of American visitors in Jamaica does not stem from a place of fear and anxiety – it stems from a place of confidence. The safety of American citizens is a top priority in Jamaica.

We always advise caution when visiting a new destination, regardless of where it is located, as it is important to be aware of your surroundings. We also always encourage travel protection options so that clients are covered in the event of an emergency. However, currently, we do not view traveling to Jamaica as a risk to our clients. We will monitor this advisory closely and provide updates to any of our clients should this stance change.

At the end of the day, we encourage our travelers to make their own informed decision based on comfort levels and we will support that decision in order to give our clients the most comfortable vacation experience possible.
