Idk who needs to know this because it took me 25 years and a TikTok to learn but putting your fruit in mason jars rather than the containers they are stored in at the time of purchasing is a HALLELUJAH for me 😅 I tried it after I saw it and will never go back, it keeps the fruit fresh for everrrr!!

Beloved by many and detested by others, okra has become a staple of Lowcountry cooking generally -- although roots of the plant lay in Africa and it is deeply embedded in Gullah Geechee foodways.

It's known by many names across the South that reflect its African origins including gombo, gumbs, quingombo, okro, ochro, bamia, and quiabo. You may know some of these names but fewer Americans know its botanical roots. It is the seed pod of a beautiful hibiscus and a member of the mallow family-- as is cotton.
You can find okra on the menus of many Gullah Geechee restaurants across the Gullah Geechee Corridor.

This refreshing strawberry-lemonade cocktail is named The Jubilee to celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, celebrates the day, June 19, 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and two months after General Robert E. Lee surrendered. Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the end of chattel slavery and has been celebrated for over 150 years.

Many of the foods and drinks associated with the Juneteenth celebration are red to symbolize the bloodshed and sacrifice of enslaved ancestors.

The Jubilee Recipe
1.5 oz Vodka

0.5 oz Fresh lemon juice

0.5 oz Simple syrup

0.5 oz Strawberry puree

4 oz water

Garnish: Lemon wheel, fresh cut strawberries

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail mixer with ice and shake. Pour into a Collins glass. Garnish.

The Roasted Strawberry Margarita From Cointreau

Ingredients
• 1 ounce Cointreau
• 2 ounces mezcal (can substitute Tequila)
• 1 ounce fresh lime juice
• 2 ounces roasted strawberry purée

Directions
1. To make roasted strawberry puree: Remove strawberry tops, broil-char in oven. Let cool. Place in blender. Fine strain.
2. Add all ingredients to shaker with ice.
3. Shake and fine strain over ice into a rocks glass.
4. Garnish with lime wheel and roasted or grilled strawberry
