On MLK Day, we honor Fort Smith's remarkable Black history—from the soldiers who helped establish our original fort in 1817 to legendary lawman Bass Reeves, who rose from enslavement to become one of Indian Territory's most effective deputy marshals. These trailblazers embodied Dr. King's dream long before the civil rights movement.

Remembering Adelaide Hall, the second oldest building on Garrison 🏛️

The recent fire at Bricktown Brewery reminds us of the rich history beneath its walls. In 1870, this site began as the Fishback Block, built on Jeremiah Kannady's historic blacksmith shop. Named after Gov. William Meade Fishback's wife Adelaide, the 7,000 sq ft ballroom hosted grand balls, political gatherings, and even City Hall.
After an 1885 fire destroyed the original building, Fishback rebuilt, preserving Adelaide's legacy. In 1995, Richard and Jaunice Griffin lovingly restored the hall, continuing its story of renewal.
