History

Don Fruchey started our company in 1950. His dream was to build one of the best companies providing specialty contractor services. The results were so successful that our company grew well beyond his ex

pectations. Financial resources were scarce in the beginning, but Don had limitless determination and energy. He combined these qualities with the keen ability to attract the most valuable resource the company has—outstanding, highly skilled people. While we are now one of the larger specialty contractors in the Midwest, we retain our family business culture and our ability to serve customers of any size. In the early days, our strongest focus was on structural steel, bridge steel and pre-cast concrete er****on. Our largest project was the steel and pre-cast er****on of Riverfront Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio. We gradually shifted our focus as the company grew. Eventually, industrial equipment installation and plant maintenance services became the backbone of the company. We proudly note that our industrial customer list includes several clients for whom we have worked steadily since the 1950s. After a gradual transfer of responsibilities to his sons, Don retired in 1980. Robert and David Fruchey continue to pursue the goals established by their father. His daughter, Donna, and grandsons, Ryan and Adam, also work for our company, which is headquartered in a renovated, historic inn that once served travelers on the Wabash-Erie Canal. The future is bright for Don R. Fruchey, Inc., as continuous improvements create even better resources for our customers. While remembering past achievements, Fruchey will stay focused on using its experience and expertise to provide excellence to its customers.

It isn't often that a bond that formed at the beginning of a company remains and even grows. Our company and the Henry family have done lots of business often over the years. Currently they supply material to PWC through Midwest Pipe and Steel. Their interest in maintaining local relationships and developing the area is second to none. That relationship was showcased today when Jerry Henry and several others delivered a door that he found in one of his properties. It could have been discarded without a thought when it was discovered. He had it pulled out of the stack, restored and then delivered to us. We don't know exactly how we will showcase the door, but we are grateful to have it. We are also grateful for the relationship with the Henry family and look forward to the watching us all continue to build this area.

We really enjoy that we work in an industry where our common day, is doing something completely uncommon every day. Today was an exception to that even for us. We were invited to help bring down a section of the old fort's roof as a part of keeping it in good shape for Fort Wayne to enjoy for generations to come. It's a compliment to all those who work here, those who came before us, and those who are just starting that we get to do these types of jobs and support our community the way we get to. It was a great team effort today and we're proud of everyone!

Cliff Lane's story has been an amazing inspiration to so many people. He continues to help people through sharing and helping others. We couldn't be prouder of Cliff and Shawn for all they've been through and how they've managed to help others along the way. It’s a bit of a different day around here today. This is the first Monday in over 45 years that we weren’t expecting to see Tommy Tuttle show up for work. Tommy officially retired in December having started at the company in 1977. Tommy set a high standard of what he expected of himself and those around him. He kept that shop so cleaned up and tidy that when new people stopped by they were always impressed. We’re going to miss getting to work with and see Tommy every day, but we’re excited to see him start this new adventure. Hopefully he got to sleep in a little bit today.😀

The Christmas party pictures are in and we wanted to share a few highlights. We all had a great time, and some of us had a really great time. We were blessed to be able to recognize some big retirements this year that came with recognizing huge years of service awards. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to this years event making it a huge success and we’ll look forward to next years.

It’s not every day that we get a chance to celebrate someone’s retirement. This week we were fortunate to be able to celebrate all the years that Al Brooks has spent working with this company and all the people in it. Selfishly, it’s hard to watch someone go into retirement where you know you won’t be able to see them as often as you’re used, but we’re happy for Al and can’t wait for him to stop back in the future and tell us stories of all the hunting trips he’s got planned for retirement and hear what else he’s been up to. Thank you “Awesome Al” for all the years and hard work you put in, and we can’t wait to see you come through the door smiling and saying “Hey ……….”. Enjoy retirement, you’ve earned it!

The story behind the Christmas hams at Don R. Fruchey, Inc.

Sometimes the meaning of a tradition can get lost when we don’t remind ourselves or ever hear why that tradition got started in the first place. The story of the Christmas hams started years ago, when this company was struggling in its infancy. As I've heard it, Don Fruchey was walking through the warehouse and found one of his employees who’d fallen on some hard times and his family was struggling to get by. They were struggling to the point where the man wasn’t sure if his family was going to have much if anything for a meal on Christmas night. Upon hearing this Don went out and got that man and everyone else working for the company a ham that they could cook up for Christmas dinner. Every year since that time the company has made sure to hand out Christmas hams, or turkeys or something throughout the years to every employee at every Christmas time.

Some people have asked why we give out a ham or even do it at all. Why go through the headache of ordering hams months ahead of time, arranging a delivery to the yard where we then hand deliver them to every jobsite, office and yard person in the company. There’s a simple reason why, and that’s because at this company we want to make sure that no matter what ever else you may have going on in your life be it a health problem, family crisis, or some other disaster that you and your family will at least have a nice meal at Christmas.

That sentiment has been keeping this tradition alive, and so long as the Fruchey family is around it will always be one of the traditions that we continue. For everyone working at the company especially during these last few chaotic years, we appreciate all the hard work and sacrifice more than you’ll ever know. Please enjoy the ham with your family at Christmas, and remember the reason for the season.
