At times it seems the most difficult part of life is to watch someone we care deeply about go through times of grief. Comforting words hit the ears and bounce off. Eyes seem glazed over and unseeing. Hearts are afraid to accept love because when the heart is open to receive love the present pain that is there seems too great. So I open my hand and extend it. I walk forward one step at a time and as I move forward my friend begins to take a few steps with me. Each step is the beginning of a new place. One step takes us to a place that is different from where we were a moment before. One day we arrive at a location and notice children laughing, bird's singing and the beautiful blue, cloudless sky. The heart expands and perhaps tears escape from the eyes but the corners of the mouth turn up and a smile slowly forms. Our eyes meet. We both smile and continue on because that is what we do.
