Happy National Lighthouse Day! DYK the first light house was build in Alexandria, Egypt in the 3rd century BC and was one of the Seven Wonders of the World? It was destroyed by earthquakes ~1000 years later. Some more recent lighthouses from my travels here (in order) include Absecon Lighthouse, Chincoteague Island, Concord Point in Havre de Grace Maryland, and Mount Desert Maine, then the original Pharos of Alexandria. #2020 @ Atlantic City, New Jersey

Full moon climb at Absecon Lighthouse! 228 steps to the top of the tallest lighthouse in NJ, designed by Civil War General George Meade, Union commander at Gettysburg. The light keepers were not as impressed with my lighthouse mask as I expected. @ Absecon Lighthouse

The Washington Monument from the top of Arlington National Cemetery, established June 15, 1864. The heavy toll of the Civil War had rapidly filled the nation’s cemeteries, especially in the area near Washington. Robert E. Lee had called the property home less than 4 years earlier. A meaningful and beautiful stop for any trip to DC.

Happy Wild Wednesday (I just made that up) from Laurel Hill Cemetery overlooking Kelly Drive in Philadelphia. Laurel Hill, a National Historic Landmark, opened in 1836 as the country’s 2nd rural cemetery, places that in the 19th century served as green space for urban dwellers and was even used as a recreation area on weekends.

Burnside Bridge, one of several pivotal encounters in the 1862 Battle of Antietam. Memorial Day was originally Decoration Day, a way to honor the almost 700,000 Civil War dead. Thank you to all who served and a happy Memorial Day weekend!

Our nation’s capital is more than just cherry blossoms at the tidal basin! The azaleas are peaking at the National Arboretum and there’s lots of other nature to find right in the middle of the city, like This late-blooming Yaezakura cherry tree at Congressional Cemetery in Capitol Hill. 🐴More Assateague Island today! 🐴 The wild ponies have been there for 100s of years living on the beach and marshes. Currently the horse population on the Virginia side is capped at 150 and managed by the volunteer fire department. Get more facts at Best Trip Choices (link in bio!)
