Ducati Maintenance Blog – 7/28/21 – Ducati Oil Change Basics

This is one of the essential maintenance skills of a Ducati owner.

As a guideline I service almost all customer bikes every 3,000 miles.

Up to the Panigale, filters can be Ducati OEM or K&N part number KN-153.
The oil I use is MOTUL 300V Factory Line, 10W40 or 10W50. I use the higher 50 viscosity on dry clutch bikes.

I buy oil and filters online. The crush washer I buy from the local Ducati dealer or online from Gotham Cycle.

With a warm engine, on the side stand, turn off and drain the oil and remove the filter. Careful, the filter is full of oil.

No matter how well organized and careful you are, there is always some spillage so be prepared with clean shop wipes and some oil absorbent pads.

To remove an overly tight filter I use a large pair of channel locks to loosen the filter, being careful not to mar the engine case with the channel locks.

Once thoroughly drained, for 30 minutes, torque on the drain plug with a new crush washer.

Then before spinning on the filter, fill the filter half full of oil. Also remove the large rubber o’ring from the top of the new filter and dip it in the old, drained oil.
Reinstall the o’ring in the filter. I use the cardboard filter box to support the filter while doing this. (Dipping the o’ring in the old oil provides a better seal.)

Before spinning the filter on, check the engine to make sure the old o’ring came out with the old filter, it should have. A small mirror and flashlight help to see this. Clean everything before installing the new filter.

Spin on the new filter and then torque it. I use an oil filter install torque of 16 lbs. Ft. I then use a band-wrench to snug it a bit tighter, to avoid a leaking filter.

Fill engine with oil to 80% of the sight glass making sure bike is vertical (may need an assistant for this).

Fire the bike, make sure the red oil light goes out, check for leaks, turn off the engine after about a minute. Recheck the oil level after 60 seconds, then top off to 80% as needed.

Ducati Blog – 7/13/21 - Ducati Engine “Does not Start” Troubleshooting

1. Charge battery – install battery and battery tender, check battery voltage, battery needs to be healthy and use a VOM (Voltage, Ohm Meter) to read. Needs to be above 12 volts to get a healthy spark.
2. Key on – Determine what works, you should hear the fuel pump start when keyed on. Is the Kill switch set to RUN?
3. Do not crank engine – but check electrical functionality.
4. Remove spark plugs, inspect them, and record electrode condition. Are the spark plug wires in undamaged condition?
5. With a hand-engine turning tool installed, slowly rotate engine, don’t force it! – check for anything unusual, engine will not turn freely, due to incorrect timing belt placement, or low/no compression with thumb covering spark plug hole, etc.
6. If engine turns freely, go to 7.
7. Spin engine with starter.
8. Check for spark. With insulated pliers, ground the spark plug against cylinder head. If possible, check this is a darkened area. Should see a bluish-white spark. Do not crank the engine without first grounding the spark plugs, otherwise the ignitor could be damaged.
9. Perform a compression check.
10. Remove radiator and gas tank as needed. Be incredibly careful of spilled gasoline, and have an ABC rated fire extinguisher close at hand.
11. Re-Check all electrical connector and connections. Including kill switch.
12. Belt check – verify timing mark alignment, and belt condition for any unusual wear or mechanical damage to them.
13. Check valve clearances of opener and closing rockers, record each clearance.
14. Check diagnostics – OBD computer, if possible.
15. Check continuity and resistance with VOM, ignition flywheel sensors – check & record.
16. Check continuity and resistance with VOM ignitors – check & record.
17. Check continuity and resistance with VOM coils - check & record.
18. Record compression readings.
19. Fuel pressure/flow, check and record.
20. If everything checks out...
21. Reassemble.
22. Crank/start the engine.

Ducati BLOG 7/12/2021 – Belt Tensioner Maintenance

The good news is that there really is not any belt tensioner maintenance.

And, for that matter, there really is not any idler pulley maintenance either.

But they do fail, and here is why and how.

Both the belt tensioner pully and the idler pulley have internal ball bearings. They typically have a lifetime of service up to and beyond 30,000 miles.

The belts have factory grey or black plastic covers, secured with 5mm Allen head cap screws. These covers are designed to keep road debris from getting between the rotating pulley and Kevlar reinforced timing belts.

What the cover do not prevent is moisture from entering into this area.

While new timing pulleys have ample grease packed into the ball bearings, over time this grease gets displaced and can allow moisture to corrode the ball bearing surfaces.

With this corrosion, the performance of this ball bearing is drastically reduced, even to the point of not spinning fast enough to keep up with the speed of the belts.

At this point the belt begins to skid over the surface of the pulley. This creates heat and even squealing as the belt is driven by the toothed pulleys and ultimately belt failure.

What can be done to prevent this?

When ever the bike is wet from rain or washing, run the bike engine, creating drying heat and allowing the excess moisture to spin off the bearing surfaces.
Never put away a wet bike that is cold!

Also, when replacing belts, always check that these belt pulleys spin freely.

Ducati BLOG – Ducati Flame Thrower 9-29-20

I love my wife, but oh, you Ducati!

I have an old 900SS SP that was running terribly. So I ordered up a new set of Keihin 41mm FCR carbs and installed them. Started and idled great. I was very busy so I set her aside for two or three months.

Then when I got back to her she wouldn’t start. Traced this issue to ethanol melted fuel lines in the gas tank. They actually had melted into pieces. Fixed that with new fuel pump, filter, fuel lines, and a thorough cleaning inside the tank.

Then I turned on the ignition the fuel was pumping out the air vent. Fixed that! Now the motor wouldn’t turn over so I pulled the horizontal cylinder spark plug. Raw gas poured out, a lot of it, so I let it drain. The gas had caused a hydraulic lock not allowing the pistons to move.

Once drained, I wanted to spin the engine to push out any residual gas. But before I turned it over I pushed the loose spark plug into the boot and laid it near the spark plug opening so that it would be grounded, potential avoiding damage to the coil.

Turned on the key, hit the starter and to my astonishment some residual gasoline sprayed out of the spark plug hole, it instantly shot out a good ten feet right onto the Ducati banner that was hanging next to the outside door.

But now the spray wasn’t a spray, it was a yellow-orange flame that shot out! WOW, and just as quickly the flame burned out.
The spark plug had done its job nicely, igniting the pressurized gasoline spray... it was amazingly dangerous and spectacular all at the same time!! Unbelievable, and extremely dangerous...
And the Ducati flag... instantly vaporized by its namesake flamethrower.

And please, don’t tell my wife.

Ducati Fun Fact
Did you know that on Ducati motorcycles that the 20-toothed cam timing belt pulleys are all the same regardless of the year and model. They made the same pulleys for years and years without altering the design. That is why the pulley timing dot means everything on a Desmodue or Desmoquatro but not on a Testastretta.

Ducati BLOG – Why Do a Valve Adjustment? 2-23-20
Let me list the reasons and benefits.
When the service is performed properly and thoroughly, that means the technician can provide a completed spreadsheet on every valve clearance measured including what shims were replaced and resultant new measurement...
• Before and After performance - The engine runs crisper, more responsive to throttle inputs, the bike starts immediately
• In doing a valve service, the technician should normally note any other immediate service needs, i.e. missing or incorrect fasteners, leaks, worn or loose components, etc.
• It is an opportunity to maintain other normal hard to reach items such as spark plugs, battery, maintenance icon on the dash, air filter, timing belts, carb or ECU adjustments, some stuff that not normally DIY
• It is an opportunity to clean the engine area, and with a clean engine, any leaks are more apparent
• You can update your bikes maintenance log
• Honor warrantee maintenance requirements
• Have peace of mind
• Reliability

Ducati Valve Adjustment for Ducati – A 20 Step Guide, Step 14 to 17

Changing Shims

STEP 14: Replace the closing shim with the size that you have mathematically determined to the correct size.
With hemostats in place holding the valve, and with a push-tool press down on the closing rocker arm exposing the collect grooves on the valve stem, then with a steady hand install he two collets in the grooves.
DVS sells a slick tool for installing these collets, and DVS also sells a push-tool, both at a reasonable price, contact me.

STEP 15: Once the closed shim has been installed, replace the opening shim with the proper size.
With the engine turning tool, reposition the cam detent so that the opening rocker slides over top of the opening ship. Replace the black spring clip making sure that there is a thrust washer on either side if the clip.

STEP 16: Replace the valve cover using a new gasket. For the horizontal cylinder exhaust do not use a paper gasket, use a metal Ducati brand gasket. Paper gaskets tend to leak in this location.

STEP 17: Repeat STEPS 9-16 for the remaining valves.

Ducati BLOG – Two Valve (Desmodue) Service 1- 29-20

Ducati Valve Adjustment for Ducati – A 20 Step Guide, Step 13
Changing Shims

STEP 13: You have determined by your measurements that a closing needs to be replaced.
Rotate the engine so it is at TDP for the cylinder that needs the closing shim changed on and then remove the opening shim.
Use a pair of hemostats with the shrink tubing on the jaws to clamp the valve stem as low as you can on the valve stem without pinching the rubber valve seal. This holds the valve from dropping downwards into the cylinder and on top of the piston.
Use a tool to press down on the rocker to arm, thus dropping the fork of the arm supporting the shim. This action allows the closing shim to move down the valve stem. This will expose the collects which are sticking to the valve stem by an oil film. (initially rotate the engine 10-15 degrees to allow the rocker arm to rotate down allowing the shim to move down the valve stem).
With the shim dropped, exposing the collets, use a magnet to pull the collets from the valve stem. Store them temporarily in a safe location.
Once the collets are removed, release the pressure on the push tool and then remove the closing shim from the valve stem. Leave the hemostats in in place for the reassembly operation.
I change one shim at a time rather than removing multiple shims, it makes keeping track of all the shims and collets easier.
Measure the thickness of the closing shim with the 1” micrometer and determine the replacement shim size.

Changing Shims

STEP 9: Now the measurements are made, and the measurements compared to the desired clearances, there is probably a shim or two that needs to be changed in order to achieve the proper valve clearances.
Start with the piston at TDC, either horizontal cylinder of vertical cylinder. It depends on the shim(s) to be changed.

STEP 10: Carefully remove the black spring clip on the rocker arm shaft with a pick. Careful because it will want to fly across the garage as it is released or comes free of the rocker arm shaft shaft.

STEP 11: With the engine tuning turning tool, at TDC, rotate the engine slowly until you can just feel a slight resistance as the cam begins to open the valve. This is the approximate rotational position of the cam shaft where you can slide the opening rocker arm on its shaft to the side exposing the opening shim on the end of the valve. This is fiddley process step so be patient. You will have to hunt around for exactly the right degree of rotation, don’t try to force anything, it will simply slider over once the rotational position if found. Make a note or picture of the pulley position where this is, for reassembly purposes.
STEP 12: Once accomplished, removed the opening shim. Measure the shim with a 1” micrometer and record the value. Replace the shim will the size needed to achieve the proper opening clearance, as dictated by your previous, Step 7 measurements (NOTE: you should already know which shims need replacing as a result of the measurement taken in Step 7).

Ducati Valve Adjustment for Ducati – A 20 Step Guide - Steps 6 & 7

Measuring Valve Clearances

STEP 6: Use the engine turning tool to find Top Dead Center (TDC) of the of the horizontal cylinder with spark plugs removed. Use an engine turning tool to get the most accurate result. Take your time.
Finding TDC can be done by placing your thumb or finger-tip over the horizontal cylinder spark plug opening while rotating the engine with the turning tool.
You’ll feel the compression stroke of the piston as it moves towards the top of the cylinder head because both the intake and exhaust valves are closed. When the piston reaches the top of its stroke with the valves closed, you have reached what is called, top dead center.
Top dead center (TDC) is the engine position where the valve clearances are measured. There is a TDC for the Horizontal cylinder and by rotating the engine 270 degrees, a TDC for the Vertical cylinder ( since the cylinders fire 90 degrees out of phase from each other).
Rotate the engine several times to get the “feel” of manual engine rotation, finding both TDCs as you rotate the engine. You can the engine either direction but I normally turn it in the direction of least resistance.

STEP 7: With the horizontal cylinder at TDP you can remove the 2 valve covers and measure the intake and the exhausts valve opening AND closing clearances. NOTE: on all Ducati engines you will have to remove or temporarily relocate fairings, the oil cooler, and any other wires or sensors. Use a feeler gauge to measure the opening clearances, start with the .004” gauge. Measure the clearance and record them being very careful to document which clearance you have measured.

Ducati Valve Adjustment for Ducati – A 20 Step Guide
Preparation - Gather tools together and locate your bike so it’s easy to work on. Have a fire extinguisher and clean rags at hand.

STEP 1: Remove bodywork, seat, and gas tank.

STEP 2: Disconnect battery terminals (negative terminal first), overflow lines, hold down straps, and remove battery

STEP 3: Just like the battery, you need to remove or temporarily relocate any components blocking access to the valve covers. These components may be an oil cooler, a hose, a sensor, wiring, a suspension member, or other auxiliary component. You should take a picture of the original location or fastener arrangement prior to disassembly.

STEP 4: Remove spark plug boots and spark plugs. This is necessary to temporarily remove the compression in the engine because the engine needs to be rotated by hand.

STEP 5: Remove the small alternator cover, held with two screws from the left side of the engine. Install and T-shaped engine turning tool.

Measuring Valve Clearances

STEP 6: Use the engine turning tool to find Top Dead Center (TDC) of the of the horizontal cylinder.

Ducati BLOG – Trouble Shooting 1-13-20

Its easy when there is a defined problem, it easy when something is obviously broken.

What’s not easy at times are symptoms, especially intermittent symptoms.

They can be very time consuming is you have never experience them before.

Usually someone has experienced these symptoms as well and usually made an online posting in a forum or on a YouTube video. Those posts can be specific right down to the make and model of the bike.

In addition to the online information provided, tools are needed, even specialized tools.

One of the most useful trouble shooting tools in an Ohm Meter or VOM. It can measure continuity and resistance.

Buy a basic one and learn how to use it.

Ducati BLOG 1/8/2020 – Dreamlining

It’s a belated Happy New Year wish to everyone!

I have substituted Dreamlining for making New Years Resolutions. It was something I did late last year, beginning in the November timeframe.

What is Dreamlining?

Simply stated, Dreamlining is daydreaming on steroids. Its writing down the wild and crazy stuff that you would like to do in the future, without too much concern about how it will be achieved.

Dreamlining is intended to pull those dreams from the corners of your mind and write them down, which is the first step in keeping those thoughts from evaporating.

Just try it and see what the list looks like! It’s fun.

You will be surprised how many of those dreams happen once written down...

Ducati BLOG 12/25/2019 – Batteries Not Included

It seems like an appropriate phase for Christmas Day.
An often-done change by Ducati owners is to replace the old school lead acid battery to a different type of battery. Lithium, high discharge, compact-sized, the list goes on.

When things go south, and electrical trouble shooting is required or when the dash maintenance icon needs to be reset then I wish for the original battery that the Ducati engineers had specified.

My thought is this, lead acid replacement batteries are virtually bullet proof, they have the discharge rate the electrical system was designed for, they weigh more (hint: rider eat less and lose weight), readily available (eBay), and they don’t cost much.

Next time you’re in the market for a battery, lead-acid is still the good choice.

Happy Holidays!
