Now that the 2023/2024 student educational tour season has come to an end, we would like to thank our great clients and tour company partners for a successful season! Students from all over the country traveled with us to learn the history of our country and to enjoy visiting historical sites. We would like to recognize our great group from Oregon and Washington who wrestled the title of "Cleanest coach of the season" from our great group from Missouri. Not one piece of trash left on the coach after 6 days! 🤯

We pray that everyone has an enjoyable and unforgettable experience! We eagerly await the arrival of our 2024/2025 school year groups and spending time with our teacher/chaperone friends again. Thank you all for choosing Potomac Tours, if truly means a lot.

On July 2, 1881, Charles Guiteau shot President James A. Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Station in Washington, D.C. The assassin Guiteau was unhappy with the President because he was under the illusion that he deserved an ambassadorship to Vienna for supporting Garfield in the previous election. At the train station, Guiteau walked up to President Garfield - who was about to board a train to travel to visit his sick wife - and shot him in the arm and the back. The shooter was quickly captured. Others rushed to aid the President.

Instead of letting the wound heal with the bullet left in the body, the President’s doctor kept widening the wound with unwashed hands to remove the bullet. This led to the infection that killed Garfield. Garfield was only president for 120 days before he was shot on July 2 and died more than two months later on September 19, 1881. Guiteau's temporary insanity defense did not sway the jury and he was executed by hanging. The approximate location of the shooting is near two wayside panels along the National Mall across Madison Drive from the National Gallery of Art. Learn more about President Garfield at James A. Garfield National Historic Site.

In the last days of World War II, the United States and Soviet Union moved onto the Korean peninsula and began to remove the Japanese forces who had occupied Korea for decades. A negotiation with little Korean input divided the land along the 38th parallel into North and South, each under the influence of a Superpower. Koreans on both sides sought to reunify the country and prepared for war. On June 25, 1950, North Korean troops invaded South Korea, beginning the Korean War.

North Korean Leader Kim Il Sung believed that with Chinese and Soviet aide he would be able to overrun South Korea. After only two days of fighting the capital city of Seoul fell. By the end of July, the South Korean forces - supported by a slowly increasing number of American troops - were forced into a small pocket in the southwest corner of the country. This “Pusan Perimeter” was where South Korea would either stand or fall.

In the three years that followed, United States and United Nations forces fought for South Korea while the Chinese Army entered the war on the side of the North. Back and forth campaigns raged across the peninsula, devastating the land and people. In 1953, an armistice ended combat along a border similar to the prewar line.

More than 1.7 million Americans fought in the Korean War. More than 36,000 died. In their honor, the Korean War Veterans Memorial was dedicated on the National Mall in 1995. Featuring 19 stainless steel statues and a mural wall of etched photos representing support personnel, the memorial offers a powerful experience to all who visit.

Happy Juneteenth! On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people in Texas were free. Although President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation only freed enslaved people in states that had joined the Confederacy and slavery in the United States was not fully abolished until the 13th Amendment was ratified on December 6, 1865, General Granger's announcement was still a powerful message felt throughout Texas and the other southern states. Juneteenth – a name combining June and nineteenth - was celebrated by freedmen in Texas as an annual event beginning in 1866.

In the following decades, Juneteenth commemorations spread across the country as African Americans migrated from Texas to other states. Juneteenth parades were often led by men who had served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. Those proud veterans represented a group that fought in every major campaign and battle during the last two years of the war, earning 25 Medals of Honor. Lincoln recognized their contributions, saying “Without the military help of the black freedmen, the war against the South could not have been won.” We honor them on Juneteenth and every day at the African American Civil War Memorial.

Next time you visit the Jefferson Memorial, take a look up at the sculpture in the pediment above the entrance. The triangular design holds a carving of five men, commonly called the “Committee of Five.” On this date in 1776, the Second Continental Congress picked those five men to draft the Declaration of Independence.

A few days before, a resolution was put forward that “all political connections is, and ought to be, dissolved” between the Colonies and Great Britain. Just in case that resolution passed, the Committee was tasked with writing the official announcement. The five men were Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, and Robert R. Livingston of New York.
The already swamped Adams told Jefferson, “You can write ten times better than I can” and placed him in the role of primary author. Franklin and Adams supported him by reviewing and editing the document before it was presented to the Congress. While the other two members did not play a large role in the writing process, Sherman is the only founder to have signed all four of America’s original great state papers and Livingston helped convince New York to vote for Independence, and later helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase.

As we approach Independence Day, we hope you’ll visit the Jefferson Memorial and give a wave to the Committee of Five.
