May Event Declutter Your Kitchen

Spring has sprung and summer will be around the corner before you know it! If you enjoy spending time outdoors this time of year, spend a little extra time this month taking inventory of the items you have in your kitchen that no longer serves you.

Spend some extra time in your kitchen looking for things in your kitchen that are broken, outdated, no longer useful to anyone. Doing this first will create extra room in your kitchen.

As you are going through your kitchen keep in mind the second Cha. It is about finding things that no longer serve you but just may BLESS someone else this summer. Have a donation box ready for these items.

The last part is about Putting Things Away. Now that you have created space in your kitchen, think about how you use your kitchen. One area is the preparation area. Do you have everything you need handy to prepare your evening meals? The next area is the baking area. Setting it up that makes sense to you will make it easy to bake for all the summer holidays. Finally the last area is storage. You have already been there looking for outdated food. This should create enough space where you can organize by the way you cook and bake.

This event is held twice a year with the next event being in November. November is more about getting it ready for the holidays so you can enjoy them with the rest of your family. May is a wonderful time to really clean AFTER you have decluttered.

There's lots of information on How To. Don't go on a wild goose chase for the perfect one. Instead, grab your notebook, study your kitchen and ask yourself the question, "Do I have my kitchen set up so it saves time and makes sense to me?" Not all of us have a brand new kitchen. Mine for example was remodeled 10 years ago according to what I could afford and the shape of the room.

It is more important that you embrace the likes and the faults in your kitchen because this is what you have to work with. Let's all have a wonderful kick off to the Spring/Summer Season!

Now that I am 85% decluttered, I really pay attention to what comes into my home. We cannot keep our homes company ready if we don’t remove the items the new one is replacing.
My conclusion? Decluttering must become a ‘Habit’. Part of Habit 5, the Tidy ‘Reset’ 15 minutes is also the time to look for items that can be tossed, donated or sold. I have been practicing it this way and now decluttering isn’t so much an issue. If I have a decluttering project, I will block some time out of my day with the assumption to not take out more than can be put away in an hour. It was hard at first and I did it. When You Declutter, Never Take Out More Than You Can Put Back In An Hour
When you first begin your journey into decluttering, many of you want to do it all at once and be done with it. I was the same way. The fact is you still have to live your day to day life. Sure if you want to use one of your vacations to do this you can, but for me I can think of so many other things to do with a vacation.
When I first started my journey I didn't follow this rule. Soon my entire house was upside down. In fact it was worse than when I started. What I finally learned was until I had a set of habits I do daily to keep myself, my family and my home in order, decluttering wasn't going to matter. I would be right back at the same place if I didn't change my habits.

This is definitely a learning curve for everyone. Usually a crisis is what gets you to want to declutter. Instead why not focus on the 9 Daily Habits of Marilyn’s Way?

When I set out to create a home keeping system it had to be different than what I was trying because I failed at them miserably. I was successful in my communications in sales job and was well organized. Yet when I came home to my apartment it looked like a tornado had gone through it. I would have sprints of cleaning and still tried to do the cleaning on Saturdays that I grew up with. I needed some tools that were going to work for me and my way of thinking. Let me introduce you to the importance of habits.
There are many things we do in a day th
at have become habits. Some are good and some are bad but with a little tweaking they can all turn into good.
What stresses us out the most? Feeling Overwhelmed. Ask anyone. I needed tools to keep me from feeling overwhelmed. I have never liked home keeping and yet understand the importance of having a well run home. So why wasn't it happening?
Many times we look harder than we need to and the simple things get overlooked. Could a set of 9 Daily Habits solve this? What would the habits need to be to make it easier? You can find the 9 Daily Habits in the Feature section of this group and they are listed on the header.
The more I practiced these recurring 9 Daily Habits the easier life began to be. Soon I found myself with moments of free time. That's when I realized the answer to my home keeping problems was in the 'habits'. I went on to create a set of weekly habits, monthly zone work and monthly decluttering events all recurring with the priority to always be the 9 Daily Habits. You know what? It's working!
I invite you to give my system Marilyn's Way a try. Start small with committing to a couple of the habits that you will make time each day to do. Once they become comfortable, add another one. Make Marilyn's Way your last stop for home keeping, decluttering and self care needs.

In 2020 the word I found myself using over and over was 'Reset'. I have been using it ever since. For some reason saying the word 'reset' seemed to have built in self forgiveness. The main reason I would find myself having to reset myself is because, I was taking on more than I could chew. It wasn't until I got familiar with Time Blocking that I found I didn't have to reset myself so much. What is time blocking? It is about getting a realistic view as to how much time things take to do. This led me to asking myself what needs to be done each day and how long is it going to take? I made a list of things to do each day that would become the 9 Daily Habits and marked down on an average how long it would take. Whenever I got the don't wannas I can go to my list and add up the minutes it would take to do them and many of them are less than 10 minutes.
We need 3 parts to our day. Part 1 - Begin Your Day, Part 2 Get Things Done and Part 3 End Your Day Planning For Tomorrow. That is what the 9 Daily Habits is all about. Each part has a set of 3 habits that are easily associated together making them easier to get done. Start out with one and add as you feel comfortable. Soon, they will become automatic!

Home keeping is about having a set of habits that you become consistent at. There are 3 parts to your day. Get Started, Get Things Done and End your Day with Plans for tomorrow. Yet many of us struggle. I will tell you a secret. The reason your home is filled with clutter is because you have never established a system that will work for you. Not having one in place leaves room for overspending. If we can't find it, a big box store is usually minutes away to purchase another one. So you see where this is going.
I invite you to begin practicing the 9 Daily Habits. Choose a habit you will commit to each day and always allow time for it. From there you add another one. Most of the 9 Daily Habits take less than 5 minutes to do. It is all about getting into the habit of doing it. Any Day is the Right Way to Begin Again. Wake up each morning with your best intentions. Out of this comes progress.

Welcome to April! April showers and income tax due are what this month is about. So for the month of April we are diving into our paper clutter! Years ago I did a 30 day paper declutter where I spent at least 15 minutes devoted to paper clutter and you know what? Lots of paper was shredded! Paper clutter event happens twice a year with the next time in October. I will be writing more about paper clutter. You may not know I work weekends and will be taking Mom to the Cardiologist on Monday. I will jump in when I can.

[LONG POST WORTH THE READ]
Many of you are also members of other 'Decluttering Groups'. I am so happy you are here! I want to Personally Welcome You to Marilyn's Way!

I spent years in the category of 'FAILING' when it came to this. The thing is, I was DETERMINED to create a way for someone like me who has always hated housekeeping to be able to get past that.

So what is Marilyn's Way? It is a "Home Keeping 'System' with Monthly Decluttering Events and Self Care".

Today is the last day of 2020. For the next few weeks you will be bombarded on the internet with companies selling products pertaining to the the New Year. They will be saleable products for goal setting, the perfect planner for you, and decluttering courses. Some may be great products and others will be just an attempt to take your hard earned money.

You don't need to purchase a decluttering course to begin with Marilyn's Way. I have been working the system I created 10 years ago and I am going to tell you the system covers it all! There are 4 components to the system that you build as you go.

The first component is the 9 Daily Habits. This is where you will spend most of your time. The 9 Daily Habits are also Life Skills. Many of us for various reasons were not taught proper life skills. This makes it difficult to be on the same page in order to get a better understandig. We must do these 9 Daily habits first and get comfortable with them before we can begin to declutter.

WHY? It is the very REASON we are in the situation we are in today. If we don't establish a set of daily habits, this is when all the clutter invades our home. Can't find it? Buy another one. dirty dishes in the sink? Yup, and then we think we need more dishes so we never run out. Instead of buying another set of dishes, why not set the timer for 15 minutes and get the dishes in the sink washed? There are several other examples but you get the idea.

First I want you to just 'Breathe'. The system of Marilyn's Way has everything. The BEST part is that it is DOABLE! I am a recovered 5+ year pajama ju**ie. The habit that made everything happen for me was 'Habit 1' GET DRESSED! I tried for over 5 years in my pajamas to get my home in order failing over and over. It wasn't until I made 'Getting Dressed' my #1 PRIORITY that positive changes began to happen. It didn't happen overnight. It happened by making a CONSCIOUS DECISION to 'Get Dressed' each day.

The 2nd component of the system Marilyn's Way are 'Weekly Habits' for specific days in addition to a 'Weekly Home Tidy'. If you just worked the first 2 components for a month, YOU WILL SEE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE!

The 3rd component is focusing on a specific zone for the week to begin with decluttering first before you can clean it. Finally the 4th component is all about 'Monthly Decluttering Events'. There are 3 months set strategically throughout the year to declutter your entire home with 2 months out of the year that is focused on 'Clothes Clutter, Paper Clutter and Kitchen Declutter'

I tried for years focusing on decluttering while my dishes, paperwork and laundry piled up. It DOESN"T WORK!

I found I must FIRST have a set of Daily Habits to get my home back to basics. Then I began my decluttering journey. I will never say this is easy. It took some hard work for me to get where I am today.

Hopefully by sharing what I created will make it easier for you to start.

I have learned lots about having the word 'CLARITY' as my word of intention for 2020. Many postive changes I have experienced just adding this word daily throughout the year.

Marilyn's Way is always looking for ways to get members motivated. The other day the word 'MINDSET' came to mind. I believe incorporating this simple word into our daily vocabulary in the coming new year of 2021 will have a POSITVE impact on our year.
