Busy busy day! We started the day in Ísafjörður. We had a a beautiful young girl sing traditional Icelandic songs. We toured town and enjoyed some local treats. Then on to their small botanical garden.
After lunch we repositioned to a Vigur Island. Its 3 residents (1 family) operate an Eiderdown farm. They take such amazing care of the Eider duck that live freely on the island. The farmers climb the hillsides to collect the down nests.
On our way out to sea the ship cut its speed, detoured, and we followed a pod of humpback whales for about an hour. 🐋One even had the audacity to breech after I took a break from holding my big camera 🤦🏻‍♀️. But wow!! Huge bucketlist item for me. 🥹

Amazing day!! We started with a stop at Drangey Island in the Skagafjörður fjord. Mystical is the best word to describe it… especially as the fog rolled in. We finally saw our puffins. Several were still nesting and had not moved on yet. Then after lunch we moved inland. We decided to go Glacier River Rafting. Only my hands and face were freezing. The guides stopped halfway and made hot chocolate from the natural hot springs. 😳 🌊
Every evening several of the staff scientists and naturalists give excellent short presentations about the area. Gerard is one of a favorites… not only a naturalist but an expert on Viking history.

Made it through some rough waters in the morning to our first stop: Djupavik. 🌊(Big thanks to the complimentary seasick meds available on board!) We enjoyed a beautiful hike followed by a tour through the old Herring factory.🐟 The owner conducted the tour and it ended with Icelandic wedding cake. To top that off, I had the scrumptious chocolate dessert on the ship. Good thing there’s more hiking on the agenda 😋

Day 2 was spent exploring the Golden Circle. Words and pictures just can’t do justice to the amazing scenery. Hot pots, glaciers, Gullfoss Falls, Icelandic horses, and geysers. 🗻Besides the falls, the highlight of the day was walking along fissures in earth where the tectonic plates of Europe and North America meet.

Beautiful first day in Iceland. After smooth flights and airport pick up, we headed to the Sky Lagoon. We soaked in the geothermal pool and participated in the 7 step ritual. Perfect way to relax after a long flight. I didn’t even mind that our Blue Lagoon tour was cancelled due to volcanic activity. 🌋

We had a great lunch, followed by a quick tour of Hallgrímskirkja (largest church in Iceland) and a stop at the National Museum of Iceland. Finally a quick nap at the hotel and a great dinner getting to know some fellow shipmates. Now time to crash before a full day tomorrow!
