Read! Read! Everyone is welcome!

is our itty bitty book club for busy moms who wanted a casual, fun, book club experience without the pressure of meeting too often or worrying about time restraints.

This will be an interesting movie! If I remember correctly, we loved this book when we read it for book club!

So it seems most of my reading lately is with my girls - which means mainly YA and/or assigned reading from school. Luckily, the books they've been reading have been really good and I've enjoyed them, too. A member of our club asked for suggestions for her young, reluctant reader and so I thought I would share my opinion on what my oldest and I just finished last night.
I am a big believer in reading aloud to my kids and I'm fortunate that my 11 year old still allows me to do so. Some books don't translate well to be read aloud but others are perfect for it. The Cay by Theodore Taylor is one that is so fun and really perfect to share aloud with your 10-12 year olds. The story is great - set in WW2, a young boy and a Caribbean old man named Timothy survive a bombing and end up together on a deserted island. It's a great story of perseverance and learning to trust and respect others. Timothy has a fantastic accent and the author did a great job writing it so as you read, you actually sound like him. We had a blast and my 11 year old was giggling every time I had to read Timothy's parts. I highly suggest this book for all ages - it's exciting, endearing, and a fun read. There's also a follow up that my daughter begged me to check out of the library as soon as we could, so I consider that a good sign!
Happy reading!

It's been a long time since I've updated and our book club is pretty much defunct..but, my daughters and I have been reading a lot, as usual, and the books we've read lately have been great choices. So, I thought I'd share them with whoever looks at this page still!

We were on a Neil Gaiman kick over the summer. Neverwhere was our first choice and it was INCREDIBLE. Such a great story - totally sucks you in. My oldest daughter even named her new goldfish after the main characters!

Stardust is another we read. Very good, magical, almost a fairy tale. Very slow start, especially for kids, and some parts that are a bit too mature for young readers (easily skipped over though) but overall a great story.

We are currently reading Ready Player One and we are loving it. It's exciting enough for young readers - the computer/online themes are relevant and familiar but the 80s references are fantastic for parents reading aloud.

Hope everyone is reading a lot - I love that my kids and I are continuing our little book club together!

I haven't updated in awhile since we haven't been meeting but I felt like this needed to be posted -
Please say some prayers, send good energy, positive vibes to a member of our book club. Her family is going through some serious issues right now and needs our thoughts and prayers. Thank you!

Great meeting last night! Our next book is The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Meeting is Sunday March 30th at 8pm. Location TBA. If you can host, let me know. RSVP as soon as you can.

The Goldfinch
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love-and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Our next book is "Five Days At Memorial" by Sheri Fink. Meeting is Sunday, February 9th at 8pm. Location TBA.

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs 5 days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amid chaos.

After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.

Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing.

In a voice at once involving and fair, masterful and intimate, Fink exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals just how ill-prepared we are in America for the impact of large-scale disasters—and how we can do better. A remarkable book, engrossing from start to finish, Five Days at Memorial radically transforms your understanding of human nature in crisis.

It’s just another chapter in a life full of adventures for Allan, who has become entangled in the major events of the twentieth century, including the Spanish Civil War and the Manhattan Project.
