CLIENT – How much will it cost to do this job?
CONTRACTOR - $2,800 dollars.

CLIENT – That’s too expensive for this job!
CONTRACTOR – How much do you think it should cost?

CLIENT – $800 max! It’s a simple job!
CONTRACTOR – I can’t do the job for so little.

CLIENT – People in your line of work wants to make a huge profit!
CONTRACTOR – I’m sorry you feel this way. Why don’t you do the job?

CLIENT – But, but, I don’t know how to do any of that.
CONTRACTOR – For $900, I can teach you everything you need to know to do the job. You can then use $800 to do the job, and you’re still saving $1,100. Also, you will obtain all the knowledge and the experience for the next time you need to do this job.

CLIENT – Deal!
CONTRACTOR – Great! To start, you need to buy tools. You will need a chipping hammer, a nail gun, a laser, a drill, a mixer machine, PPE, and some other things.

CLIENT – But, I don’t have any of those tools and I can’t buy all that for just one job!
CONTRACTOR – Ok. I can rent you my tools for another $300. You’re still saving $800.

CLIENT – That’s cutting my savings, but I will rent your tools.
CONTRACTOR – Perfect! I’ll be back Saturday and we can start.

CLIENT – Wait! I can’t Saturday. I only have time today.
CONTRACTOR – I’m sorry, I only teach others on Saturdays. I have to prioritize my time and my tools needs to be in other jobs I have during the week.

CLIENT – Ok then. I will sacrifice my family’s plans on Saturday.
CONTRACTOR – Right, me too! Oh, I forgot. If you’re going to do the job yourself, you need to buy the materials. There’s a high demand nowadays, so your best bet is to get a truck and be at the hardware store by 6am before other contractors get there.

CLIENT – AT SIX IN THE MORNING? On Saturday? That’s too early for me. I don’t even have a truck!
CONTRACTOR – I guess you’ll have to rent one. By the way, do you have some helpers to help you load the truck?

CLIENT – You know what? I’ve been thinking. Probably is better for you to do the job. It’s better to pay you to do the job right and not having to go through all that hassle.
CONTRACTOR – Good thinking. Sign here and let me get to work.

This is the truth.

People are not just paying for a job, they are paying for knowledge, experience, tools, time, family sacrifices, and other things you bring to the table.

Don’t let others dictate your worth.

5 Misconceptions About DJs:

1. That we have every song imaginable.

There are literally 24,000 songs released daily on streaming services, to have every song released as high quality MP3's a DJ would fill up a 1 TB harddrive with less than 18 days of music. Please don't act shocked when we don't have track 4 from your favorite YouTube rapper's new mixtape.

2. That us not playing your request is a personal slight against you.

As DJs we are trying to keep a roomful of people engaged and in most cases dancing throughtout the evening. We are almost always given a musical directive, in a nighclub/bar by management/ownership or at a private event by the person who contracted us for the event. We are trying to play for everyone in the room to the best of our ability within the perameters of the aformentioned musical directive often skewing toward demographic majorities in the crowd. We are also taking a crowd on a music journey and controlling the vibe of the night. A song that might be appropriate at midnight might not be appropriate at 10 pm or 2 am. Sometimes your request may not fall into the music directive we've been given or in our expert opinion from years of experience we might not feel the song will work with the crowd in front of us at that given moment. It is no slight to you, we don't know you and we don't want to ruin your night. However we also don't want to ruin the night of the rest of the guests either which is why we won't play the festival trap remix you requested 10 minutes before closing time when we're playing Jodeci.

3. That we have the control over the music format in a bar/nightclub/party.

To an extent this goes in tandem with number 2, but definitely deserves it's own spot on this list as well. Just like a radio staion has a music format, just like a restuarant has a style of food they serve, most venues/parties do setup music format expectations with their DJs. We have freedom within the boundries of said format and we can maybe push the limit a little bit, but sorry just like your favorite Poke joint can't serve you Bananas Foster, I can't play Morgan Wallen on Latin night or play Harry Styles on Hip Hop Night or play Lil' Durk on EDM night. Legit don't only consider the venue but also their music format when you decide to go out, it will make your night more pleasant. Also, be aware that some venues have different music formats different nights.

4. That all DJs do is show up for a gig.

First of all gigs don't materialize out of thin air. Whether bar/club or private they all involve advanced conversation about pay, gear, times, location, music format, load in/out and more. Then contracts need to be signed and on rare occasion even negotiated. After the music is decided on it has to be prepped. Sometimes downloading new tracks are necessary and at a minimum organizing existing tracks is always necessary. If it's a large scale sporting event the music prepped may even need to be approved by management in advance of the event. Every day is emails and phone calls and texts. Sometimes site visits are necessary in advance too. Some DJs practice scratches, routines, etc. at home during the week. And don't forget it's 2022 and business doesn't materialize out of nowhere. DJs work on the daily to put out social media content, mixes, videos, etc. to remain relevant to remain booked. Trust me that we spend more time at work before/after gigs than we spend playing them.

5. That our life is all fun and games.

It's a lot of work and if you work in the private sector it requires a lot of money to acquire and maintain gear. And don't get me started on travel gigs which seem so cool until you get booked in California on a Friday and get done at 2 am and have to be back on the East Coast for a gig Saturday. You do the time zone math on that one.

I love being a DJ, if I could go back 100 times I would not choose a different career path, not even my childhood dream of being a first baseman for the San Francisco Giants which would have netted me a 2010 World Series ring. That being said, I feel bad that the general public doesn't understand some of these misconceptions so I wanted to take this opportunity to bring them to the forefront. In the words of my favorite rapper...if you don't know...now you know.

A CONVERSATION ABOUT PERCEIVED VALUE:

A customer asked a contractor friend of mine how much it would cost to do this project.

My friend gave him a proposal: $4500

The customer responded: That’s seems really high.

My friend asked: What do you think is a reasonable price for this job?

The customer answered: $2500 maximum

My friend responded: Ok, then I invite you to do it yourself.

The customer answered: I don't know how to.

My friend responded: Alright, then how about for $2500 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $2000, you'll learn valuable skills that will benefit you in the future.

The customer answered: Sounds good! Let’s do it!

My friend responded: Great! To get started, you are going to need some tools. You will need a chop saw, table saw, cordless drill, bit set, router, skill saw, jig saw, tool belt, hammer, etc..

The customer answered: But I don't have any of those tools and I can't justify buying all of these for one job.

My friend responded: Ok. Well then for an additional $300 I can rent my tools to you to use for this project.

The customer answered: Okay. That’s fair.

My friend responded: Great! We will start the project on Monday.

The customer answered: I work Monday through Friday. I’m only available on the weekends.

My friend responded: If you want to learn from me then you will need to work when I work. This project will take 3 days so you will need to take 3 days off work.

The customer answered: That means I’m going to have to sacrifice my pay for 3 days or use my vacation time!

My friend responded: That’s true. Remember, when you do a job yourself you need to account for unproductive factors.

The customer answered: What do you mean by that?

My friend responded: Doing a job completely from start to finish includes time spent to plan the project, pick up materials, travel time, gas, set up time, clean up, and waste disposal amongst other things. That’s all in addition to the actual project itself. And speaking of materials, that’s where we will start on Monday so I need you to meet me at the lumberyard at 6:00am.

The customer answered: At 6am?!! My work day doesn’t usually start until 8am!

My friend responded: Well then you’re in luck! My plan is to start on the deck build by 8am. But to do so we have to start at 6am to get materials picked up, loaded and delivered to your job site.

The customer answered: You know, I’m realizing that a lot more goes in to a job than what a customer sees in the finished project. Your proposal of $4500 is very reasonable. I would like you to handle the project.

CONCLUSION:

When you pay for a job, especially a custom job, (whether it’s a physical project or digital project) you pay not only for the material and the work to be completed. You also pay for:

✔️ Knowledge
✔️ Experience
✔️ Custom Skills
✔️ Tools
✔️ Time to plan
✔️ Time to prepare
✔️ Professionalism
✔️ Work Ethic
✔️ Excellence
✔️ Discipline
✔️ Commitment
✔️ Integrity
✔️ Taxes
✔️ Licenses
✔️ Sacrifices
✔️ Liabilities
✔️ Insurance

If you request a proposal for custom work to be done, please don’t disrespect a service provider by trying to get them to lower their prices.

If their proposal exceeds your budget, there’s nothing wrong with getting other proposals.

Just remember.. you get what you pay for.

👉🏼 SERVICE PROVIDERS: Know your worth and be confident in it.

👉🏼 CONSUMERS: Recognize their worth and be respectful of it.

Sharing this to support all my friends, family and clients who are Entrepreneurs, Business Owners and Tradesman.
