Aurora borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely over Yosemite Valley???

Turns out, it really is possible! Last night, the skies over Yosemite glowed with the pink and purple hues of the northern lights.

The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, occurs when high-energy material from the Sun flares towards the Earth. The amount of radiation from these flares would be really bad news for life on Earth, but thankfully our planet has a magnetic field to shield us! As our planet's magnetic field works hard to divert solar radiation away from the Earth, the radiation hits the upper atmosphere of our planet. This radiation combines with molecules in the atmosphere to act like a big neon sign, illuminating the sky in green, red, and blue colors. The stronger the initial flare towards the Earth, the further towards the equator the aurora is visible.

The aurora was visible throughout mid-latitudes across the world last night, making this the most extreme geomagnetic storm since 2003. Even though the aurora in Yosemite is a once-a-decade phenomenon, it is a wonderful reminder to always keep an eye out (and up) for unexpected beauty.

Despite May's arrival, a late-season storm left Yosemite with a dusting of snow. Ever-fleeting is the snow, with the more typical spring weather forecast for the days ahead. Enjoy this magic while it lasts!

Bridalveil Falls (from earlier this year).

It’s nice to be back at the foot of the waterfall, again, to hear it better, and to feel its spray. 🙌🏽

Have you ever caught yourself wondering:
🌡️ What's the temperature in Tuolumne Meadows?
🌊 How much water is flowing past the stream gauge at the Pohono Bridge?
☁️ How is the air quality in by Big Oak Flat?

Well then we have an incredible resource for you! The Yosemite Observer Dashboard, made possible in part by the generosity of Conservancy donors, provides real time data for the park. See for yourself at: https://goyose.org/49K5lCB

The Yosemite Observer Dashboard was developed by the Physical Sciences & Landscape Ecology Branch of the Resource Management Division in collaboration with Adina Zucker, a GIS intern. This innovative platform is meant to help connect budding or at-home scientists, classrooms, and other educational partners with information to help answer those particular Yosemite questions.

Clicking around the Yosemite Observer Dashboard website will show you current data in the park as well as information about the different disciplines represented: air quality, fire, geology, hydrology, and landscape ecology.

Did someone say, “snow”? The most recent storm left us with a few inches here on the floor of Yosemite Valley, but blue skies above and a warming forecast suggest that these snow-covered scenes may not last long. In the meantime, though, expect icy conditions on roads and trails. Sturdy footwear is advisable, even on the flat paths, and traction devices will be helpful on trails that ascend the cliff walls. At the top, you’ll probably want snowshoes or skis.

For current road conditions in the park, including tire chain restrictions, please call the road status phoneline anytime at 209/372-0200 (then press 1 and 1).

Road Closure!

UDPATE: Big Oak Flat Road (Hwy 120 from the west) will reopen today, Saturday, April 6, at noon. Chains or 4WD with snow tires are required. Please drive carefully.

ORIGINAL POST: Big Oak Flat Road (Hwy 120 from the west) will remain closed overnight due to heavy snow. Crews are working hard to plow the road and we expect a reopening Saturday morning (no later than noon). We appreciate your patience as our crews work safely to open the road.

Yosemite is reachable via Wawona Road (Hwy 41) and El Portal Road (Hwy 140). Chains may be required. Call 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1) to check road status.

Big Oak Flat Road is open below Foresta junction. Foresta residents can enter/exit the park via El Portal Road/Hwy 140.

You might want to carry those tire chains.

Drive safe.

It may look like spring, but winter isn't over yet! We are expecting another winter storm starting tonight. Several inches of snow are forecast in Yosemite Valley through Friday, with a foot or more on the roads higher up. This is a cold and significant storm, so tire chains will likely be required on all roads within (and perhaps leading to) Yosemite for the next several days. Please call 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1) to check current road conditions.

Even though weather this weekend is forecast to be dry, hikers should expect most trails to be snowy and/or icy (traction devices may be helpful). For longer hikes, be prepared to navigate by GPS (with ability to use a paper map and analog compass in case of GPS failure); snow will obscure trails in most places.

Did you know that when Horsetail Fall lights up like fire during the sunset in February, the effect is only visible from a certain angle? On today, make sure you take this into account if you’re looking to visit our park next month for the Horsetail Fall event (along with getting your entrance reservation for visiting on most weekends and the holiday!)

Although you certainly get a nice view of El Capitan and the fall from the west, the famous effect only occurs if you watch from a more easternly vantage, such as in El Capitan Picnic Area. The decision of where to go is quite easy these days as a set of road and trail closures during the event will funnel you into some of these prime viewing locations (and away from more sensitive ecological features like riverbanks.) However, to see the effect, you’re going to need to park and grab a spot in the designated areas alongside everyone else.

So, get your reservation on Recreation.gov two days in advance of your trip if you’re visiting on the last three weekends or holiday this February, and ultimately plan to arrive no later than mid-morning for the sunset. Even though Horsetail Fall may be visible near Bridalveil Fall, there’s no “firefall” to see for those stuck in traffic west of El Capitan.

For more information about the Horsetail Fall event, including logistical, safety, and resource protection details, visit https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/horsetailfall.htm.
