HAZARD - This PVC pipe was installed in the middle of Sarah Creek off the York River, near the entrance at R-2. The Virginia Marine Police said it looked like one of four corners demarcating a proposed oyster field. But aren't they supposed to be outside the channel?

WTF - Why would anyone go to the trouble of jacking up a dilapidated shack for a new foundation instead of just razing it and rebuilding? “Because,” a contractor told me, “this house is grandfathered in a commercial zone — provided we don’t tear it down. We intend to gut it and rebuild it entirely.” The house is on Route 143 in York County, just east of Penniman Elementary School. "It's not really a house, just four sheds linked together."

BLOCKED - Starting in April and extending into the winter, the Colonial Parkway will be essentially closed between Route 199 and the Yorktown detour. The lead engineer said this week that work will commence on Segments D&E (shown in green and yellow), effectively blocking any through traffic. The best detour seems to be I-64 to Lee Hall.

RIDDANCE - As many as 20 derelict sailboats and motorboats on the Hards at York River Yacht Haven are in the process of being crushed and trucked away. A few wooden boats date to the 1940s. Once the hill is cleared and graded, more current boats will move here from down the hill to make room for an outdoor showroom by Boaters World-Williamsburg.

GOOD IDEA - When Boaters World Williamsburg hauled my sailboat for work on the hards, Larry and Seth cleverly put not one, but two 8x8 blocks under the keel to position the boat a little higher on the ground. The result was much easier access to the bottom, shaft, prop and keel. Good for them!
