At the recent quilt show sponsored by the Courthouse Step Quilters and Mills County Historical Museum, Judy Wigley shared her beautiful “Postage Stamp” made by her grandmother, Elva Moreland. The quilt is made of many teeny tiny 1” squares.

Mills County residents may remember Elva as a nurse who worked with Dr. Marvin Childress for 37 years. No one knows how many babies she helped deliver, shots she gave, children who were comforted after being bandaged by Elva. But did you know that during the war, she moved to Vancouver, Washington, to do defense work? She went to school to be a welder and spent her days welding on ships and other military equipment. It was probably during this time that she started piecing this great quilt! It was quilted later after returning home to Texas after the war.

It has been suggested by Judy’s friends that sometime when she has nothing else to do, she might count the number of little pieces in this treasured quilt!

"This was the retreat I wanted. A simple home, far from busy city life, surrounded by trees, peace and quiet.

All the beds were comfortable. The heaters worked well at night to keep us warm. I brought five children with me, and all 7 of us had plenty of room to spread out and sleep well. We loved the wooden toy Noah's ark! What a treasure! We also enjoyed the children's books and play kitchen."
