Mabie, CA – 1/29/2025, We regret to inform you that the search and rescue personnel from Plumas County Search and Rescue recovered the body of 18-year-old Leonardo Mikelonis of Sparks, NV, today. Sheriff Todd Johns and the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

We understand the community's concern and desire for information; however, we urge the public to allow us ample time to notify families before sharing details online. Premature sharing of information unintentionally causes additional distress to those affected.

Missing Person Search Underway in Mabie, CA – January 28, 2025

MABIE, CA – On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 2:49 PM, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing person near the Middle Fork of the Feather River, located west of Mitchell Lane in Mabie. The caller, who was fishing with two others, stated that one individual had fallen into the river and was believed to have been swept under the ice.

Emergency response teams were immediately deployed, including Plumas County Search and Rescue, Eastern Plumas Ambulance, Beckwourth Peak Fire, and additional air and ground support from local agencies. Despite extensive efforts throughout the afternoon, the search was unsuccessful. Search efforts will resume at first light on January 29, 2025.

Out of respect for the privacy of those involved, no further details regarding the missing person will be released at this time. The Plumas County Sheriff's Office will provide updates as new information becomes available.

The escaped inmate, Caleb Duerr, 39-year-old, white male, 6 feet 1 inch, 165 lbs, was last seen walking southbound on County Road A23 from Highway 70 in Beckwourth at around 9 AM. Please be on the lookout and call 911 if you see someone matching the description. He has likely changed clothing at this point. There is a multi-agency response to this incident and updates will be provided as they become available.

Around 8:00 AM Plumas County Jail inmate Caleb Duerr escaped from the Plumas County Jail in Quincy. He is a white-male-adult, 39-year-old, 6'01" tall, weighs about 165 lbs., brown hair, blue eyes, last seen wearing dark blue jail issued clothing. He is considered violent and dangerous. Last seen near the O’Reilly’s auto parts store in Quincy. If you see the subject, please call 911.

Please be mindful, yield to crews and equipment, and avoid lingering, watching or blocking any routes or areas as this is an active situation.

Update from what’s now being called the Gold Complex (Smith Fire and Mill Fire).

Air support, ground crews and dozers pushed all night. The Mill fire is now approximately 1,600 acres. More resources are ordered and downtown Graeagle is being set up as base camp.

Today’s efforts will be focused on the Smith Fire to keep it knocked down. Its acreage remains around 50.

Please be cautious around Graeagle and fire apparatus.
