Rodeo cowboy “Dusky Deamon” Bill Pickett was born in Williamson County on December 5, 1870. After leaving school at a young age to work as a ranch hand, Pickett developed the technique of "bulldogging." This method involved biting a steer's lip and wrestling it to the ground, inspired by observing herding dogs.

Pickett and his brothers established the Pickett Brothers Bronco Busters and Rough Riders Association, showcasing their skills. In 1905, he joined the renowned 101 Ranch Wild West Show, becoming a star performer. Pickett's fame led to his appearance in early motion pictures, including the 1921 film "The Bull-Dogger."

In 1971, he became the first African American inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s Rodeo Hall of Fame. A Texas historical marker commemorating his life was dedicated in Taylor’s Heritage Square in 1992, and a prominent statue of Pickett stands at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Welcome to the Texas Lakes Trail Board Amy! We are so excited to have you part of our team.

Amy Borders, Director of Communications and Marketing, has been selected to serve on the Texas Lakes Trail Board. The Texas Lakes Trail Region is a 31-county area stretching from the Red River in the north to the Bosque River in the South, and features beautiful scenery, historic downtowns, and western culture. The area is one of the ten regions of the Texas Heritage Trails program of the Texas Historical Commission, promoting heritage tourism in the state.

“A regional approach to tourism brings our communities together, each harnessing our unique and valuable local strengths. This collaboration boosts visitor appeal, supports sustainable growth, and benefits the entire area’s economy,” said Borders. “I am both excited and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these efforts.”
